Stepping into a sci-fi industrial setting filled with cables and metal boxes, the light cut through the cold gray haze, casting highlights across the hem of the white lab coat. The core objective of this shoot was capturing an austere, cool-toned mood, so for the wardrobe I chose a pure white lab coat over a black pleated skirt, Black stockings, and black leather shoes. The stark brightness of the white against the dark, ruinous backdrop created sharp contrast, effectively making the subject pop. During the shoot, the photographer deliberately used hard, cool lighting, working alongside floor cables and equipment crates to cultivate an oppressive yet enigmatic atmosphere.
Managing the cables on the ground was actually quite tricky—when kneeling, I had to carefully avoid sharp metal connectors to keep from snagging my Black stockings, and my knees occasionally ached from the hard floor, but finding that all-seeing gaze angle required testing numerous poses. Reaching out with my hand referenced the character's grand narrative gestures from the story; the fingers needed to appear natural and relaxed rather than stiff. To match the metallic environment, the makeup toned down warm hues, emphasizing an aloof and elegant demeanor. While physically demanding, finding composition angles in such an intricate environment was immensely rewarding. Leveraging foreground occlusions with cables and crates gave the shots remarkable depth, preventing the background from feeling flat.
I've shot many different themes before, but this cool-toned laboratory style was uniquely challenging—for instance, wrinkles on the lab coat directly affected light and shadow rendering, requiring constant posture adjustments while standing or sitting to achieve the right drape. Tomorrow I'll be shooting other storylines, but the harsher sunlight there might make it difficult to replicate this crisp, hard-light texture. This shoot was mainly aligned with the Arknights: Endfield testing cycle; overall, my command of the shooting rhythm improved greatly, and I gained fresh insights on leveraging hard lighting to convey a cyberpunk atmosphere. Being so meticulous with the Black stockings after the shoot has become a fun memory.
