For this photoshoot, I chose Cirno from Touhou Project for an Outdoor cosplay session. Since the character is an ice fairy imbued with a crisp and nimble aura by design, I specifically chose a lush, moisture-rich forest stream as our location. Not only was there cool stream water and splashing waterfalls, but also thick ancient trees coated in moss and stone bridges arching over the water. I felt this natural environment provided an Ethereal forest vibe that wonderfully complemented the refreshing summer forest charm of the ice fairy.
Preparing this outfit took quite a bit of effort. The light blue short wig was styled with an oversized blue-and-white bow headpiece, making it instantly recognizable visually. The dress is predominantly white, embellished with light blue ruffled frills and lace detailing, while the large pink bow at the chest added a warm accent to the palette so it wouldn't feel overly chilly. The translucent ice crystal wings on the back were the soul of this styling; though they had some weight, they looked exceptionally crystal-clear under the water's light refractions. For the lower half, I opted for white stockings with ribbon bow details paired with chunky black Mary Jane heels—a White tights cosplay choice that retained girly charm while beautifully elongating the leg lines.
On the day of the shoot, my synergy with photographer Yunjian glow was seamless. We explored various angles across different spots; for instance, the shot sitting on tree roots by the brook utilized a low-angle perspective, blurring the water surface and the waterfall behind to accentuate a tranquil mood. The one ultimately chosen for the cover was a candid capture of me holding the snowflake prop—the standing posture was relaxed and elongated, beautifully showcasing the leg lines and tiered skirt layers, with the photographer executing flawless shutter timing.
Outdoor shooting is rarely as easy as it looks; the forest was humid and full of mosquitoes, yet none of that dampened our passion for great photos. We climbed over tree roots, walked across mossy stone steps, and even waded into the stream multiple times to find optimal camera positions. Throughout the shoot, I constantly had to watch that the skirt hem didn't catch on branches or slip on slick rocks. To capture dynamic movement leaping across the water, we crossed back and forth over the stone bridge several times, getting my shoes completely soaked—yet reviewing the photos at the end made all these little struggles feel completely worthwhile.
This work primarily aimed to express the character's unconstrained, lively spirit rather than rigid, forced poses. Whether lifting my skirt hem atop a bluestone slab, perching on a tree branch gazing into the distance, or holding up the ice crystal snowflake prop, I completely immersed myself in the scene, imagining myself as a true ice fairy dwelling by the stream. The lens focus and play of natural light softened the texture of the white tights and dress; avoiding exaggerated body movements instead fostered a quiet, introspective ambiance in this Cirno cosplay.
Finally, special thanks go to photographer Yunjian glow for their hard work, bringing insightful ideas to lighting and composition while continuously adjusting camera angles to capture the most natural states. I believe cosplay is not merely about replicating outward appearances, but an immersive experience of stepping into that world. Although the journey from preparation to wrap was filled with challenges, leaving behind a photo series like this amidst the mountain forests and streams brings an immense sense of accomplishment. I hope future creative projects continue this deep understanding of environment and character to bring more captivating content to everyone.
