This shoot was part of my collaboration with photographer @祖木子- for the 1km Photography Contest and China International Comics Festival convention photos. To bring out Shimoe Koharu's signature blend of playfulness and subtle allure from Blue Archive, we put dedicated effort into both styling and staging.
The black modern cheongsam served as the centerpiece of the entire look. The fabric was chosen with subtle jacquard textures, which rendered with remarkable clarity under the window's natural sunlight. The collar retained the traditional mandarin collar design with golden frog fasteners, yet featured a teardrop cutout at the bust alongside black halter ties, balancing delicate sophistication with a touch of allure. Both sides of the skirt featured pink piping, while the side slits comfortably revealed the inner black safety shorts, allowing effortless movement with zero worry of wardrobe mishaps.
To align with her character lore, I added white plush sleeve cuffs. The fluffy texture created a striking visual contrast against the black velvet finish of the cheongsam, and the little pink bows adorning the sleeves injected an extra dash of sweetness. For the legs, I wore pure White stockings reaching over the knee, paired with black high heels sporting red soles. The white stockings cast a delicate sheen in the sunlight, visually elongating my leg lines while forming a timeless black-and-white contrast against the dark dress—which I consider the most eye-catching highlight of this look.
Regarding props, the hovering red halo above my head was the soul of the photos. To keep it from swaying during the shoot, I pinned it to my hair bun with discreet bobby pins, fine-tuning the angle so it genuinely appeared to float mid-air. The grayish-brown wings on my back were delightfully substantial, featuring distinctly layered feather textures. In side-profile shots, the wing span echoed the white folding fan in my hand—black and white, dynamic and serene.
The shoot took place in an indoor space featuring expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. The sunlight that day was gorgeous; the afternoon light streamed through the glass, casting long, elegant shadows across the floor. We took full advantage of natural lighting for extensive backlit shots. Under backlighting, the edges of the pink wig glowed radiantly, and the fuzz on the plush cuffs looked delightfully fluffy and tactile. To capture these nuances, I relaxed my posture in front of the lens and experimented with varied poses: when standing, anchoring my weight onto the back leg while resting the front toe lightly on the floor maximized the curve of the white stockings; leaning against or perching on railings, I used the folding fan to half-conceal my face, casting a flirtatious, teasing gaze toward the camera to cultivate an alluring, elusive mood. In several close-up portraits focusing on my face, the pink cosmetic contacts and subtle red blending beneath the eyes looked remarkably translucent in the sunlight.
Truthfully, wearing the wings and fluffy cuffs did impose some mobility limits, especially when turning my torso, as balancing the wings' counterweight was essential to avoid leaning back. But seeing the interplay of light and shadow flowing across the fabric jacquard on playback made every adjustment feel completely worthwhile. The folding fan was an invaluable prop—not only masking the face or pointing directions, but also providing an organic rest for my hands while posing.
Throughout the session, we continually tuned lighting angles and fan placement to ensure every frame captured optimal tonal depth. The final results—blending white stockings, stilettos, the modern cheongsam, and that iconic halo and wings—fully brought out Koharu's sweet yet spicy duality. It was a thoroughly enjoyable shooting experience that deepened my understanding of this character's styling.
