The theme of this photoshoot was Asuma Toki cosplay from Blue Archive. When preparing this outfit, the most challenging aspect was actually the texture of the floating halo above the head. To recreate that high-tech, glowing pale-blue effect from the game for this Sci-fi cosplay, I chose a custom acrylic ring embedded with LED light strips. However, during the actual shoot, the glow easily blew out against the pure white backdrop. After tweaking lighting angles multiple times with photographer @AikoJustPressesTheShutter, we finally struck a balance between the halo's circular gradient and the soft light on the face.
The dress itself is a minimalist White dress outfit featuring a white spaghetti-strap mini cut. Its silhouette is remarkably light, but to keep the skirt hem naturally flared in an A-line shape, the lining was reinforced with slightly structured mesh tulle so that pinching the hem creates smooth folds following the fingers. In terms of accessories, the bright cyan-blue choker is the finishing touch, echoing the hue of the halo; choosing a slightly turquoise-leaning bright blue kept it from looking abrupt. The slender black bracelet on the wrist is subtle, yet it introduces a touch of contrasting dark tone to the white-dominated palette, defining the arm lines more crisply.
What I want to highlight most this time is the pair of glossy nude tights for this Stockings cosplay. During the shoot, I specifically chose high-shine sheer tights paired with white pointed-toe high heels, which created distinct glossy highlight ribbons along the instep under the lights. Because the mini skirt falls right around the mid-thigh, gently lifting the hem instantly showcases the glossy texture of the legs, which was the visual focal point the photographer emphasized throughout. While these tights look fine in natural light, they easily develop blown-out localized specular highlights under intense studio lights, so in post-production, we slightly dampened the leg highlights to ensure a natural transition between skin and stocking textures, avoiding an oily, plasticky look.
For the hairstyle, the light blonde straight hair was crafted by splicing two wigs together. The bangs needed to stay blunt and neat while the ends required an airy, floating volume, so bobby pins and setting spray provided localized structural support. During the shoot, a fan blew gently from the rear-side angle; the dynamic flutter of the hair synced seamlessly with the gesture of lifting the skirt hem, keeping the posture fluid and natural. Eye makeup was kept understated, focusing on clear eyelashes and gaze clarity, because the blue contact lenses were already eye-catching, and excessive eyeshadow would detract from the cool, detached aura of the Sci-fi cosplay halo.
During the shoot, there were quite a few little hiccups—such as the halo battery unexpectedly dying, requiring a quick battery swap and readjustment of the mounting bracket, or the heels occasionally catching on the edge of the reflector, making the stance slightly wobbly. Yet the final chosen photo captured the most natural poise: weight balanced on the left foot, right leg extending subtly forward, left hand gently lifting the skirt, and right hand resting naturally at the side, forming beautifully relaxed lines. The background was kept as a pure white studio cyclorama without gradients or textures, solely to emphasize the clean purity and futuristic vibe of the character.
Often, the joy of cosplay lies not just in recreating physical appearance, but in capturing that "everyday yet subtly detached" aura of the character. Asuma Toki in Blue Archive is a truly fascinating character: beneath her high-tech exterior lies an endearing charm. Thus, when posing, I didn't deliberately try to act overly cool, but rather made it seem as though she was casually passing in front of the lens, inadvertently lifting her skirt hem. Achieving this naturalness is actually harder than striking rigid poses, and thanks to the photographer constantly chatting to help me relax, we captured this wonderfully organic moment.
Although the White dress outfit fabric is airy, it is prone to sheer translucency under light, so I wore a matching base layer to ensure safety under intense illumination. Additionally, the subtle dark-red outsole of the shoes was deliberately chosen; though nearly swallowed by the white backdrop, that peek of red provided a warm visual anchor in an all-white frame, preventing the look from feeling overly cold. The final photo underwent minimal liquify retouching, focusing primarily on tuning color temperature and contrast so that the white background looks cleaner, the halo softer, and the glossy sheen of the Stockings cosplay looks just right.
