[Mari Iochi cosplay] Blue Archive's Qipao Style: Classical Elegance Paired with White Thigh-Highs and a Round Fan

Shooting this modified qipao variant of Mari Iochi cosplay from Blue Archive was primarily aimed at showcasing the character's serene and gentle temperament. Instead of choosing a complex set for this studio session, we constructed an atmospheric Chinese-style study room using wooden-frame folding screens, a dark armchair, and scattered calligraphy paper.

The entire outfit features a modified Qipao cosplay design with a white base and blue trim; its biggest highlights are the harmonious blue-and-white color palette and the cut-out tailoring at the chest. White plush sleeves on the shoulders break the rigidity of traditional qipao, adding softness and playfulness. For the bottom, I specifically paired white thigh-highs with white high heels, striving for extreme color consistency between upper and lower halves. This monochromatic continuation effectively elongates visual lines during White studio photography. As for props, thin gauze round fans, calligraphy brushes, and ancient book scrolls fully match the scholarly air of this outfit. Whether gently concealing the face with a round fan or holding a brush in thoughtful contemplation, each gesture fills the frame with a quiet narrative tone.

The high-key lighting used in this white studio set posed a significant test for costume details; while a white visual space eliminates clutter, it can easily lead to a flat, thin layering effect. Thus, the gaffer intentionally retained shadow details during lighting setup to display the natural fabric folds of the skirt and the fluffy texture of the plush accessories. Regarding posture planning, to highlight the side-slit design of the modified qipao and the elegant lines of the white thigh-highs, I experimented with various sitting and standing postures. My personal favorite was a seated pose stretching my legs forward and sideways, which not only elongated leg proportions within the composition, but also clearly rendered the silhouette of the white high heels at the bottom of the frame.

Mari Iochi is inherently a composed character, so in controlling expression, I leaned toward an intellectual and slightly languid feel. Keeping my gaze calm and soft without overemphasizing energetic vitality, I created a state of the character being immersed in a sea of books during leisure time through subtle actions like lightly stroking book scrolls or resting a cheek on one hand. This restrained mode of expression often conveys a character's true spirit far better than large, dynamic movements.

Throughout the session, the photographer seamlessly captured many natural turns and wandering gazes. The alternating interaction between holding the calligraphy brush and round fan especially endowed the photos with a classical, elegant aura while preserving the lively, airy charm unique to 2D Cosplay. The interplay of white backdrop, wood grain, and blue trim within the frame yielded an exceptionally crisp visual impression. The synthesis of makeup, costume, and scenery offered a fresh attempt at interpreting modified traditional style elements. Reviewing these finished photos, the book scrolls, tea sets, and scattered calligraphy rubbings created a balanced lived-in feel—and it is precisely this relaxed environment that elevates the fine detail and texture of the outfit itself.
