Once the styling for Baoqing Fangzhu was finalized, we invested substantial effort into the garments and props for this Chinese-style cosplay. The hair was styled into a deep blue-black short bob with blunt bangs and braided double buns on the sides, paired with Fox ear styling featuring pink-and-white accents alongside orange floral headpieces. Cosmetically, the focal point centered on the outer eye corners, blending broad washes of red-orange eyeshadow paired with bold crimson lips to evoke a seductive yet chilly, aloof mystique.
For the wardrobe, the inner layer consists of a crimson silk camisole woven with subtle damask jacquard, cinched at the waist with an obi-style corset sash patterned with cyan wave crests. Over this draped a lightweight, sheer cyan-blue robe featuring wide flowing sleeves, adorned with white linear stripes and classical curling ocean motifs. The sharp color contrast of red and blue proved remarkably striking on camera. For the Smoking pipe prop, I prepared a long slender kiseru pipe: a black lacquered stem tipped with a green jadeite-like mouthpiece and a brass bowl, accented with a black Chinese knot and white bead tassels to keep details rich.
The shoot was conducted in a studio set configured with authentic classical Chinese woodwork, backed by carved wooden daybeds, traditional armchairs, and moon gate window arches. To faithfully capture that surreal, water-town fantasy aesthetic, the set was adorned with pink Lotus blossoms and leaves, paired with smoke machines generating rolling banks of white mist. Throughout the session, I explored diverse stances for this Ancient style portrait—half-reclining on the bamboo bed, crossing my legs on a wooden stool, and holding the pipe tip close to my lips. Because the pipe is quite long, hand gestures and angles required continuous fine-tuning to feel organic without obscuring my facial contour.
Going barefoot was another essential element of this shoot; whether crossing my legs or stretching out naturally, it channeled an unbound, effortless languor. Under the swirling haze, illumination relied on a softbox base complemented by sheer pink canopy drapes, giving the overall composition a hazy, dreamlike texture. Before each shutter click, I coordinated lighting and smoke density with the photographer to ensure my gaze and body language conveyed the character's enigmatic, unflappable composure.
The entire series avoided convoluted post-production, relying predominantly on on-set lighting and environmental set design to establish the mood. While the studio got stuffy and breathing through the heavy fog was somewhat challenging, seeing the red and blue robes billowing through the haze made every bit of preparation worthwhile. The smooth, lustrous silk sheen under the lights and the metallic glint of the props enriched the visual depth of every frame.
