Shooting this hololive Houshou Marine cosplay took roughly two weeks of prep work. From trimming the wig to perfecting every garment detail, I kept a direct eye on every single step. The long crimson hair, paired with lace hairpieces on both sides, would disrupt the head-to-body proportions if worn even slightly too low, so I adjusted the placement repeatedly during makeup trials. The outfit's core is a red-and-black palette; the gold trims and waist belt had to be made quite rigid to support the structured silhouette. The black mesh panels across the top and the crisp white stripes along the pleated skirt were particularly testing during cutting and sewing, as the slightest deviation would alter the overall visual balance.
To honor her identity as a virtual talent in this VTuber cosplay, I dialed up the contrast in my eye makeup: red cosmetic contacts combined with darkened eyeshadow sharpened and focused my gaze. The set was located right in front of a bar counter display, where warm amber lights spilling from behind and from the side set a mysterious, gently retro ambiance. The over-the-knee Black stockings and brown heeled booties were pivotal to the look—the stockings' matte texture popped against the moody backdrop, working with the heeled boots to visually elongate my legs.
During the session, I concentrated on two main poses. One was a standing posture, resting one hand lightly near my collarbone with a subtle torso tilt, which elegantly showcased the shoulder tailoring and waistline. The second was seated on a black folding chair with legs crossed. Seated poses were considerably more demanding on bodily control: the transition where the skirt hem meets the tall stockings wrinkles easily, requiring constant micro-adjustments of leg angles to keep the lines clean and crisp. Photographer @上升的气流君 handled the lighting and bokeh masterfully, melting the liquor bottles, red wine, and roses in the background into soft light orbs that framed the subject without distraction.
The shoot was far from effortless—the multiple costume layers combined with the wig's weight made holding still poses tiring over extended periods. Yet seeing the final photos made every bit of effort worth it. The composition avoids unnecessary clutter, letting the red, black, and brown palette deliver punchy visual weight. Breathing life into a character through body language and lens interaction is the most rewarding part of cosplay for me. Fine-tuning wardrobe details and expressions is a continuous journey toward closing the gap with the character's original design.
Between takes, I actively discussed compositions with the photographer. For the seated shot, the crossing angle of the legs, the directional point of the boots, and even the hand placement on the shoulder were all calculated to guide the viewer's eye. Controlling the depth of field was just as crucial: preserving the soft silhouettes of the bottles established context without stealing focus. The entire shoot was a creative dialogue, marrying the physical space with personal interpretation to enrich the performance. Bringing a character to life through costume, props, makeup, and environment forms the core of every shoot. This photo log is my fresh interpretation of Houshou Marine, and I look forward to experimenting with more diverse styles to bring two-dimensional characters into vibrant, three-dimensional reality.
