[Eirin Yagokoro cosplay] The Brain of the Moon from Touhou Project: Unfurling a Scroll with a Healer's Benevolence

As the Brain of the Moon in Touhou Project and the pharmacist of Eientei on Earth, Eirin Yagokoro possesses a singular, distinguished aura. For this practical studio shoot in Nanjing, I put considerable thought into the styling and posing to capture that balance of aloof detachment and profound wisdom.

For the wig, I went with long, silvery-white braided hair—a style that really tests one's grooming technique to look refined. I smoothed down stray flyaways with pomade, braided along the grain, and locked it in place with hairspray so the texture would hold up under intense backlighting. For makeup, the focus was kept on the eyes and brows while softening the lip color, using low-saturation eyeshadow to deepen eye contours. This captured the subtle, distant air of the Lunarians while retaining her serene composure as a healer.

The costume features the iconic red-and-blue color blocking, where Chinese frog closures at the collar and puffed cuffs add delicate textural layers. The hat bearing the red cross emblem serves as the crowning touch of the ensemble, complemented by an antique-style scroll prop prepared specifically to highlight her devotion to pharmacological studies. Under the studio lights, the fabric reflected a soft sheen, creating a distinct visual focal point through the sharp red-and-blue contrast.

The set design was deeply atmospheric: a massive full moon backdrop, cascading sheer drapes, and accents of cherry blossoms and timber furnishings infused the frame with rich Eastern classical elegance. The blue grid pattern of the shoji sliding doors harmonized beautifully with the cool-toned background. What delighted me most was the photographer's lighting setup—strong rim backlighting cast a halo across my shoulders and hair strands, merging with a faint haze to instantly summon that cool, dreamlike ambiance. Major kudos to the lighting and set design on this one.

In terms of posing, I chose to sit upright and read the scroll attentively. Without exaggerated body language, the internal depth of the character was conveyed through gaze and hand placement. Eirin carries an unhurried grace shaped by countless eras; she exudes a commanding presence simply by sitting quietly. During the shoot, the photographer guided me to keep my breathing steady, resting my eyes on the scroll before occasionally looking forward, making those contemplative moments effortless to capture.

The scroll prop was hand-weathered by myself, bound with a brown cord and frayed at the edges to give it a tangible sense of history in hand. This Nanjing practical studio is truly ideal for Touhou-themed shoots, as the carved wooden furniture and tatami textures hold up under close scrutiny. When shooting ancient or Japanese-style characters, leveraging on-site props like floral arrangements, tea sets, or lightly swaying the background drapes adds fluid motion to the frame. In post-production, we preserved the cool blue base tone while letting the red pop in clear contrast. The entire shoot went smoothly with efficient team communication.
