[Joseph cosplay] Identity V Custom Concept: The Illusionary Realm of Silver Hair and Spider Lilies

The completed photos for this custom concept Joseph cosplay from Identity V are finally ready to share. Because this design stems entirely from personal imagination detached from the original canon, please allow me to offer an advance apology for any OOC (out of character) elements. In conceiving this concept, I wanted to preserve Joseph's aristocratic elegance, cold composure, and touch of mystery while weaving in elements of Eastern fantasy. Bridging his French gentlemanly essence with my fondness for classical fantasy called for extensive preparation across makeup and styling.

For the makeup, the foundation sought an absolute pallor almost devoid of warmth to emphasize his otherworldly, immortal nature. The eye design was the focal point of the face: pale blue contact lenses paired with deep crimson eyeshadow smudged along the outer corners, complemented by narrow elongated liner to make his gaze piercing, perilous, and detached. A deep matte red lip color deepened the contrast. The wig was styled as sleek, straight silver-white hair; to give it a clean drape, it was smoothed with wax and flat irons beforehand, accented with a modest braided crown up top while leaving loose wisps to frame the face with a soft sheen under the studio lights.

Regarding wardrobe, the outer layer was a wide-sleeved navy robe embroidered with golden cranes and cloud patterns, worn over a pure white mandarin-collar inner garment finished with metallic frog closures and crimson tassels. The interplay of black, white, blue, and gold yielded a refined texture on camera. Handheld props enriched the visual narrative: holding the bamboo flute channeled a quiet, solitary poise with lowered eyes; the golden ewer favored a tranquil, restful aura seated on antique furnishings; while the folding fan and long sword expressed brewing tension for battle—especially the sword half-drawn against the red maple foliage, which brought an unmistakable wuxia fantasy crossover aesthetic to life.

The shooting phase tested both patience and technical skill. We relied heavily on hazers and stage lights to carve out the atmosphere. One set mixed cool cyan and warm pink rim lights along the silver hair against a pitch-black void, generating a surreal spatial depth. Another setup used contrasting red and green lights with dense fog, laying down red spider lilies across the foreground. Symbolizing death and guiding souls, the red spider lilies formed an intense visual clash against the stark silver hair. Achieving this required meticulous adjustments to floral heights and camera angles. Because the robe had multiple draped layers, sitting down risked unsightly bunching, requiring assistants to smooth out the train and sleeves between takes to preserve clean silhouette lines.

The shooting day was physically taxing—the fog was stifling, and locking in complex lighting schemes demanded repeated trial exposures. Yet seeing the final results, where light, shadow, character, and stage converged seamlessly, wiped away every trace of exhaustion. Crafting a personal concept may diverge from canon, but that freedom of interpretation is precisely what makes cosplay magical: redefining and honoring the characters we cherish in our own expressive language.
