Considerable care and effort went into the hair, makeup, and costume design for this shoot of the Gardener's 'Monstrous Bird' from Identity V (Identity V). Starting with the makeup, the foundation required an ultra-pale porcelain finish that appeared bloodless yet avoided looking cakey, demanding seamless transitions between contour and highlight. The eye makeup served as the focal point of the face; I chose grayish-green colored contact lenses to capture an ethereal, slightly hollow, and enigmatic gaze. The golden dots and teardrop trail beneath the right eye were painted on stroke by stroke using specialized cosmetic pigment and adhesive, carefully misted with setting spray immediately after to preserve crisp definition throughout the shoot. For the wig, this deep blue-black straight cut required the bangs to be trimmed so they partially veiled the eyes, establishing her signature somber, melancholic atmosphere. The bone-like skeletal headdress crowned with blue gemstones was surprisingly heavier than anticipated, requiring a battery of bobby pins clamped tightly into the inner wig cap to prevent it from sliding down with movement. Replicating costume fidelity was vital: beyond the main gown, the ring of black feathers draping the shoulders acted as the crowning touch. While layered feathers create rich dynamic texture, they proved somewhat stifling to wear and shed stray plumes with each movement. The necklace selected incorporated sapphire elements that echoed the headdress, anchoring the overall color palette within a cohesive cool spectrum. To capture a hazy, veiled aesthetic reminiscent of peering through misted glass, the photographer placed optical filters directly before the lens and added subtle starbursts and luminous bokeh in post to enhance the dreamlike mood. The biggest hurdle during shooting was interacting with the black raven prop. Because its eyes are crimson, they carry a striking eerie chill in low light, requiring a dedicated rim light dialed specifically to ensure the red pupils caught the gleam. The metallic vine birdcage and gilded rose served as pivotal narrative props; while lifting the birdcage, hand placement was kept deliberate and graceful, gently curving the fingers to create a delicate contrast against the dark gothic tone. In the first close-up, where the raven's wing served as an out-of-focus foreground framing element, locking critical focus was notoriously difficult, demanding tight coordination between model and photographer across multiple takes to seize the perfect catchlight in the eyes. This photoshoot strived to embody the mystical, ornate, yet mournful soul of the Gardener's Monstrous Bird. From pre-shoot character styling to on-set lighting design, every element was honed to resonate with the character's core essence.
