[Gardener cosplay] A Different Tone in Identity V, Jiangmen Jieyuan Comic Exhibition Sharing

Here are the photography results from the Jiangmen Jieyuan Comic Exhibition day, organized for everyone to see. The conceptual planning of this photo set was mainly to showcase a less conventional, alternative side of the character, so the overall atmosphere leans toward dark tones and a mysterious vibe. Before heading out for this location shoot, I specifically adjusted some makeup details: the purple fragment decal under my eyes became the highlight of this styling, which, combined with the large black wavy-brim hat and the white feathered mask in my hand, aimed to create a cold, stunning feel different from the original design. The costume's layers are quite rich, featuring a white ruffled shirt inside, paired with a black-and-purple corset externally, plus a blue waist belt and a red bow as color accents. Wearing such multi-layered clothing at a comic convention venue actually tests one's stamina and heat tolerance a lot.

Regarding poses and composition, because the large headwear/hat tends to weigh down the visual center of the frame, photographer NightDiva took note of this during shooting; photo 3 utilized a wide-angle stretching technique to give the entire frame a strong sense of interaction. Photo 2, a full-body shot sitting on a stool, nicely displays the lower body outfit combination: black tights paired with platform Martin boots, adding some techwear and crisp edge to the overall style, which is a part of this styling I personally quite like. In a complex lighting environment like a comic con, capturing clean and fresh frames often requires avoiding crowds and clutter. We chose our shooting spots in empty gaps around the venue, relying on on-site fill lights and faint ambient natural light as primary illumination.

When I first got the mask prop, my immediate thought was how to integrate it with the exaggerated brim of the hat so it became part of the overall look rather than an isolated object. Holding it in hand in photo 3 even gives off a slight witch or fortune-teller vibe. I usually look at paintings or game concept art for pose inspiration, but on-site, I still had to adjust angles based on the actual space of the convention. For instance, looking up at the lens in photo 1, and resting my chin on my hand looking away in photo 4, were both done to shape a detached yet focused expression.

There was actually a small hiccup at the convention venue: the floor reflects light, and pedestrian traffic often randomly wandered into frames during shooting, requiring the photographer and me to coordinate to capture character dynamics. Although tiring, seeing these final materials materialize makes all the hustle and bustle totally worth it. Regarding this alternative persona interpretation of the Gardener, this coordination no longer emphasizes her original soft traits, shifting instead toward a quiet sense of power. For post-processing, I didn't add too many special effect overlays, keeping the original environmental dark tones and heavily highlighting the costume textures and makeup colors.

Even though it was a summer comic con, the cool color palette in the frames makes people feel quite comfortable. Walking around in this gear for half a day was heavy and warm, but communicating simply with unfamiliar photographer friends and nailing that desired expression in the end brought a strong sense of achievement. The Jiangmen Jieyuan Comic Exhibition left a deep impression on me, and its overall venue facilities are very suitable for shooting dark-themed convention photos. However, doing summer cosplay in multi-layered clothing and a large hat requires enduring stuffiness, which is a small tip for fellow cosplayers preparing similarly in the future.
