Stepping into the forest, dappled light and shadows danced among the leaves, where the red-and-white outfit created a striking contrast against the verdant green backdrop. This Reimu Hakurei cosplay photoshoot had been in preparation for a long time. As one of the most iconic characters in the Touhou Project series, outfit fidelity was my top priority.
The oversized red bow on my head needed to carry a certain visual weight while remaining stable against the forest breeze; the wide, off-white sleeves with red trim gave an ethereal, flowing texture when walking, and the thick, pleated white ruffles beneath the skirt looked their best during spins and graceful movements. To achieve the ideal visual effect, I adjusted the petticoat layers repeatedly before setting out, ensuring the red skirt flared into a perfect bell shape. The white lace-trimmed crew socks paired with black Mary Jane shoes completed the character's signature look.
Photographer Fuyujiro put immense effort into capturing the lighting. By skillfully utilizing the soft diffuse reflections filtered through the trees, my skin looked clear and luminous without harsh shadows. Working across various camera angles with the gohei and inscribed red spell charms, we captured numerous action shots. Moments like swinging the gohei with its flowing colorful streamers and catching the large sleeves billowing in the wind added great dynamic energy, infusing the tranquil forest setting with a lively, spirited presence.
Balancing on fallen leaves and grass in heels was quite a challenge, especially with the weighty head bow. To convey the character's lightness and sharpness, I practiced my poses extensively—from locking eyes with the lens to maintaining expressive body tension and twisting to showcase different angles of the skirt. Looking at the final results, this series successfully captures the character's persona and the enchanting aesthetic of Eastern fantasy, allowing me to deeply connect with the unique charm of the character.
