For this Touhou Project outdoor shoot featuring Reimu Hakurei Cosplay and Marisa cosplay, we specifically chose a location beneath an ancient tree with a massive tree hole.

For this Duo outdoor photoshoot, we wanted to pursue a relaxed, natural atmosphere, so when choosing the location, we deliberately avoided crowded main paths in parks and found this natural big tree hole with thick roots and gnarled branches. The rough bark texture and reddish-brown autumn leaves provided a grounded reality for the fantasy elements of Touhou Project. Marisa cosplay's golden side braid paired with a wide-brimmed soft hat fit the character's classic impression perfectly, and the black lining inside the soft hat contoured her face nicely under strong outdoor light. The broom prop in her hand was wrapped with black-and-white ribbons and decorated with stars; it felt surprisingly substantial in hand during shooting, providing a great anchor point for posing.

During prep, we put a lot of thought into costume details. Marisa's black-and-white outfit featured a ruffled blouse layered with a dark vest for rich depth, while the layered tier skirt spread out naturally when seated, echoing the sturdy tree trunk. Reimu Hakurei Cosplay's red-and-white attire was undeniably the visual highlight of the frame—vibrant bright red paired with pure white was incredibly eye-catching amidst tree shadows and fallen leaves. The oversized red hairbow and bonnet with white ruffles were adorably dramatic and ideally suited for Outdoor photography. Her brown vintage block-heeled shoes paired with white crew socks formed a striking contrast with Marisa's black platform Mary Janes and white lace socks; this subtle footwear difference gave the image a harmonious feel while highlighting each character's unique flair.

Speaking of specific poses during the shoot, we didn't try to replicate intense combat stances. Instead, we mostly sat inside the tree hole or leaned side-by-side against gnarled tree roots. To fully spread out our skirt hems within the limited space of the tree hole, we exchanged subtle glances throughout the shoot, reminding each other to adjust dress folds so no awkward creases appeared on camera. This physical interaction added a wonderful sense of unspoken synergy to the final shots. For instance, during close-up shots resting cheeks on hands looking toward the lens, we held our respective props; the broom and wand acted as visual accents, elevating the feeling of two magical girls happening upon a quiet moment of rest.

In applying light and shadow, the photographer preserved plenty of natural lighting effects without heavy post-processing filters, allowing background tree shadows and fallen leaves on the ground to look remarkably authentic in this Outdoor photography set. For us, wearing Lolita and western-style dresses on location poses the challenge of maintaining outfit condition outdoors; however, these fabrics were lightweight yet crisp, so a quick adjustment after sitting down restored their natural drape immediately. As for wigs, Marisa's side braid and Reimu's long straight hair were styled and combed to withstand breezes, preventing hair from blowing out of place. We were thoroughly relaxed throughout the process; sometimes without forcing a smile, the candid expressions caught by the photographer fit the languid afternoon vibe even better.

The relaxed vibe in the final photos fits the everyday tone of Touhou Project characters perfectly—even as a magician and a shrine maiden, they need daily moments of rest. Through this natural scenery and styling, we presented a visual experience that is both professional and full of authentic life. Completing such a high-quality Duo outdoor photoshoot required thorough prep, hair/makeup communication, and seamless on-site coordination. Everyone was delighted with the final photos, as both costume craftsmanship and scene harmony met our expectations. This concludes our behind-the-scenes share of this shoot—a process filled with tacit teamwork and joy.
