The character Lynette in Genshin Impact has a cat-like elegance and composure in her temperament. To restore this trait, I chose this complex white dress for this seaside location shoot. The primary color scheme throughout the body is pure white and light blue, from the pearl necklace at the neckline to the massive blue bow on the back of the head, and then to the animal ears and feather decorations on the head, every detail strives to be close to the character's exquisiteness as an anime girl.
Choosing the beach for this outdoor shoot was largely because I felt the white foam of waves crashing onto the shore would visually form a perfect echo with this lightweight tulle dress. The sea breeze was just right during the shoot, and we tried multiple snapshots to capture the direction of the wind. Although the wind blew the hair strands into a mess, it also allowed the ribbons and skirt hem to present a natural and extended state, a dynamic motion that is hard to replicate in a studio.
In terms of gear, the photographer Yunlong utilized a large aperture to blur the distant waves and background, letting the visual focus completely fall on the character's expressions and flowing accessories. When composing, visual space for the wind's flow was also intentionally reserved, giving the image a breathing room. For the makeup, I insisted on a clean and translucent route, emphasizing the contour of the eye makeup to cater to the character's slightly misty eye color. Controlling facial expressions while shooting dynamic images is actually very hard because the body has to fight the wind's resistance while also managing the positions of the skirt hem and ribbons. But I highly love this authentic snapshot feel; it has far fewer deliberate traces.
The post-processing direction of the entire set was set to a cool, slightly blue tone, lowering the contrast of the image and enhancing the ethereal vibe. Actually, to properly express this lightweight 2D/anime character, it is not enough to just have the costume in place. You also need to blend into the environment, letting body language interact with the wind, light, and background. In this Genshin Impact Lynette roleplay, I tried to completely relax myself, letting the sea breeze dominate the body's movement. The final effect unexpectedly had a casual and natural beauty, which I think is the most prominent feature of this set of photos.
Many times, people feel that studio shoots make it easier to control output quality, but this time by the sea, the accidental strong wind became the best prop. To shoot this set well, repeatedly organizing the skirt hem and hair in the wind was truly exhausting, but looking back at these moments blown up by the wind, it is indeed way more vivid than deliberately posed stances.
The theme of this shoot was called "Angel Kitty," perfectly matching that lightweight yet cat-like trait of Lynette. We did a lot of costume preparations before the shoot, especially ensuring that the large light blue bow and hairband had enough stiffness in the wind, otherwise they would collapse and deform as soon as the wind blew.
The choice of materials for the clothing also took a lot of thought. The white skirt hem adopted a multi-layered tulle overlay design, which both guaranteed the fluffiness of the skirt and prevented it from looking heavy, allowing it to unfold naturally in the sea breeze. The sleeves section features a detached design, and this detailed treatment also perfectly restored the character's anime quality. During shooting breaks, we also utilized the reflection of the sea waves to naturally fill light onto the face, making the contours of the cheeks softer.
Actually, many friends who don't usually touch cosplay might be curious about how this natural feel brushed by the wind is captured. In addition to relying on the photographer's agile shutter response, it also relies on the model's anticipation of the wind direction's back and forth. I usually stand slightly sideways, letting the wind blow past my back, so that the ribbons and long hair naturally float forward, forming a wrapped-around feel of being surrounded by the wind, which yields results much more easily than facing the wind directly.
In Lynette's setting in Genshin Impact, she is more like a delicate and introverted observer, so I intentionally reduced exaggerated smiles in my expressions, maintaining an indifferent yet approachable state. This emotional state coordinates with the highly dynamic sea breeze environment, forming a harmonious unity of stillness and movement, which is also the character core I hope to express in this set of Cosplay photography works.
