Photographer Xinghuocuilian sent me the final photos from this session, and when I got them, I didn't hesitate for a single second before picking out the cover. The focus of this shoot was to perfectly recreate her dreamy yet slightly playful traits, utilizing the cool-toned background of the scene to highlight the large areas of white highlights and pink-and-blue gradient visual elements on the character.
For this costume, I think the most exquisite part lies in creating an overall sense of lightness. The main body of the outfit is a substantial white layered puffy skirt. To present the airy quality a magical girl should have, the skirt hem is made of a glossy fabric with a certain crispness. The waist serves as a visual anchor for this look, designed with a holographic laser-effect shiny belt; its blue heart-shaped buckle refracts a rainbow halo in dim light. The large bowknot on the chest actually consumed a lot of fabric; to keep it fluffy without collapsing, shaping mesh was stuffed inside. The pink kitten charm is a finishing touch, matching the overall pink-and-white color scheme beautifully and adding a relatable touch to the character. The ruffles on the cuffs are also double-layered according to the original design. This fabric combined with the laser belt produces a gorgeous sheen under the lights.
We put a lot of effort into the hairstyle and props. The glowing halo above her head was added in post-processing, but we also planned it during the pre-shoot phase to ensure that the halo remained stable in space while the character stood or jumped. For the most striking blue-and-pink gradient ribbon, we specially chose a tulle material with a slight pearlescent reflection. This way, the moment the backlight shines down, the texture and color transition of the ribbon become incredibly clear, allowing us to capture many flowing moments in combination with her poses. For makeup, a highly translucent base was used, paired with blue-and-pink colored contacts, slightly shimmering lip glaze, and the iconic pink heart embellishment at the corner of the eye, all to restore the character's dreamy essence.
The shoot location was actually a pure dark-toned, industrial-style corridor. The floor is made of anti-slip metal plates, and the dark gray grid tiles on the wall instantly elevate the character's brightness by a tier. The movements designed this time were all dynamic; for instance, the one-legged suspended balancing pose required balancing hand extension with the display of leg lines. We specifically looked for some challenging high-angle and low-angle shots to elongate the visual proportion of the legs, while letting the pairing of white thighs-highs and chunky-heeled Mary Janes form a clean and neat aesthetic. In the final photos, the contours outlined by the light are extremely clear, with highlights hitting the folds of the dress and the white socks, maximizing the texture.
The close-up shots also perfectly showcase the character's quirky nature—like sticking out her tongue and poking her cheeks—which, paired with the dynamic movement of the pink-and-blue ribbon, gives the character both the magnificence of a magical girl and the playfulness of an Anime girl next door. In post-processing, we focused on adjusting the contrast of light and shadow, using mild soft light to blend the edges, giving the entire set a translucent feel somewhere between reality and the anime world. I am personally very satisfied with the completion of this outfit and makeup, as well as the cooperation during the shoot; it truly captured the divine essence of this Anime girl character.
