This photoshoot's theme is "Perfect Math Class." Making a total mess of math in Touhou Project is inherently a classic meme for this character. To restore that everyday feel of an elementary school classroom, we directly found a wooden classroom real-scene location with excellent lighting to shoot.
The moment I pushed the door open, I felt this scene was too perfect. The sunlight slanted in, making the wooden desks gleam. A little fine dust floated in the light beams, and paired with the chalk writing arranged on the blackboard beforehand, I could instantly immerse myself in it. This scene itself carries a youthful yet lazy aura, fitting perfectly with the lighthearted atmosphere this cosplay photoshoot aims to express.
Speaking of this look, the costume design specifically considered accuracy to the original and wearing comfort. The light blue smooth wig has a great texture, and with that giant laced bow on top of the head, it heavily tests one's sense of balance when wearing it, but once put on, it instantly captures the character's charm. The wide pink sash across the chest, paired with the sapphire decoration right in the center, is the visual focal point of the entire dress. The cuffs and skirt hem use large amounts of lace, ruffles, and plush pom-poms for embellishment, adding a touch of tenderness to the blue and white primary color palette. Paired with white stockings and classic deep brown round-toe uniform shoes, it shapes a highly energetic look ready to make mischief in the classroom.
On set, I prepared a volleyball, notebooks, and chalk. Although the math problems on the blackboard were already full of punchlines on their own, interacting with these props allowed us to shoot many different frames. For example, cradling the volleyball while half-sitting on a desk, flipping open a notebook pretending to think seriously, or simply lying flat against the edge of the desk. Photographer Fengjian Muxi was exceptionally skilled at capturing this collision between 2D daily life and real-world scenes; he encouraged me not to be restrained and to explore this space as much as possible. So we experimented with tilted compositions, top-down perspectives, and even horizontal framing, utilizing the lines of the desks to form visual guidance, letting the figure blend into the environment naturally. This was an amazing experience of classroom photography.
The shooting process was actually extremely relaxing. After all, the theme itself comes from a highly joyful work, so there was no need to deliberately strike a rigid pose, allowing me to express myself more freely instead. The advantage of real-scene outdoor shoots lies right here: no excessive artificial light is needed, as natural light can present a great texture of light and shadow, with the sunshine clearly outlining the edges of the wig and props. Distinct from previous works that were heavier or heavily mood-driven, this photo set follows a very life-oriented everyday route, hoping to convey an atmosphere that makes people smile knowingly upon seeing it.
As someone who frequently shoots 2D works, sometimes stopping one's footsteps to feel the light spots in a real-scene space is also a form of relaxation. Looking back at this cosplay photoshoot, besides the character's inherent cuteness, the biggest highlight is those interactions with everyday life scenes. Whether the math is taught well doesn't actually matter; as long as this pure joy of being immersed in the character can be delivered through the lens, it is already completely worth it.
