When the maids of the Lungmen Guard Department from the comic leap into reality, the sensation of breaking the dimensional barrier is remarkably tangible. The dry, slightly helpless banter from the 4-koma comic, paired with this vintage restaurant wrapped in deep red wallpaper, sparked a completely different kind of chemistry. Compared to the familiar operator profiles everyone knows, this photoshoot was quite a bold endeavor for the two of us.
Madam Ch'en's deep blue-violet long hair paired with red contact lenses and a black-and-white maid dress softened her usual sharp, decisive edge considerably. Yet the moment my expression chilled and I looked on with half-lidded eyes, that unapproachable, aloof aura returned instantly. Beside me, green-haired Hoshiguma cosplay bearing her massive single horn brought an entirely different aesthetic. Dressed in a princess-style maid dress layered with pink lace and frills, her demeanor instantly turned gentle and warm, with a kindness in her eyes that practically spilled past the lens.
When planning this photo series, we felt we absolutely had to capture that slightly absurd dialogue mood from the comic: "Is it really that serious?" followed by a blunt "Yes." During the shoot, we deliberately chose a restaurant with European vintage charm—featuring oil paintings on the walls, warm lighting, and textured wood wainscoting. The white-covered book served as a fantastic prop, faithfully capturing the leisurely mood of quietly turning pages in a restaurant from the solo art. In the background, the blurred figure of the green-haired maid became the perfect colorful highlight to enrich the composition.
Regarding the costumes, I must give huge credit to my good friend. When joining me to build this cosplay project, she exclaimed, "This is the first and last time in my life I'll ever wear such a pink dress!" After all, everyone knows Hoshiguma usually rocks a tough, capable look, so wearing a maid dress layered with ruffles and bows truly turned her self-image upside down. While our interactions in the photos look effortless and natural, the skirts were surprisingly heavy, and combined with wigs and headpieces, it was both hot and burdensome. Fastening and wearing those dark dragon horns was a real technical test; had it not been to match this specific lore setting, we probably wouldn't wear them under normal circumstances.
Even though wearing these felt somewhat jarring at first—feeling distinctly OOC (out of character)—with Madam Ch'en typically much sharper and Hoshiguma much more grounded, the maid outfits softened their innate commanding presence, leading us to tease each other endlessly while suited up. But when I arranged these collage previews together, especially that sticker selfie duo shot, it suddenly felt completely on point. Official spinoff tropes are irresistibly addictive, and the magic of fan creation lies precisely in this wonderful chemical reaction of Hoshiguma x Ch'en.
During this shoot, we also gathered tons of hilarious behind-the-scenes moments, like bursting into laughter when making eye contact or getting tripped up by heavy skirts while moving through the restaurant. While the final photos showcase cold composure meeting tender warmth, behind the camera was a delightfully chaotic and joyful process. As for any imperfect details or slight liberties, they don't really matter—after all, the very essence of cosplay is having fun, tuning into the character's wavelength within a dedicated setting, and savoring that little surprise when 2D fantasy illuminates reality.
