On Day 1 of this Firefly ACG Expo, I finally brought the complete styling of Tsubaki (Guide) to the venue. Before setting out, I repeatedly checked every single accessory—the small blue top hat, mouse ears, red halo, walkie-talkie, red-and-white floral side hairpiece, and that signature red guide flag—not a single detail could be overlooked. Waking up at 6:00 AM for makeup, I trimmed the bangs of the wig and specifically adjusted its luster so that it would look natural and not too synthetic. The outfit was a tailored navy blue blazer with a crisp cut, paired with a white shirt and an eye-catching red bow tie, exuding a strong professional feel. The walkie-talkie on the chest was handcrafted and modified, with cables threaded inside the garment so it stayed faithful to the design without being cumbersome. Slipping on the white gloves instantly brought out that formal, station-attendant charm.
We took a set of convention photos on the lawn and beside the streetlight poles outside the exhibition hall. The photographer was excellent at capturing candid moments. In the first shot, I leaned against a pole, sitting with knees bent and legs together, holding the folded red flag, with my eyes attempting to convey the gentle patience unique to a tour guide. The second shot featured a single-leg leaning pose against the pole, with my left hand bracing the pole, right hand naturally hanging down, and right heel taken off and held in hand—this pose was actually quite hard to balance, but the leg lines and texture of the tights came out wonderfully. Black stockings paired with black mid-heels not only matched the character's uniform lore, but also visually elongated the legs. The third shot was a crouch pose, pressing one hand against the earpiece pretending to call headquarters while holding the red flag horizontally with the other; this semi-crouching pose demanded significant core strength, but looked very capable. The fourth shot was sitting on the lawn, raising the red flag with legs extended naturally forward, as the sunlight cast a soft sheen on the stockings. The fifth shot had me kneeling on one knee, raising the flag in a dynamic pose that, combined with the blurred street view and vehicles in the background, gave the shot a strong narrative quality.
In terms of prop preparation, the red and white color scheme was core. The halo was crafted from acrylic and secured with a bracket tied to my head with fishing line, ensuring it wouldn't block my face in profile shots. The guide flag was made of a lightweight wooden pole and silk fabric, very smooth to wave around and light enough that my arm didn't get sore after a full day. Wearing stockings for an outdoor shoot really tests one's endurance of the environment. The temperature in Guangzhou was sweltering and humid that day, but to accurately portray the character, stockings were an absolute must. I chose a relatively sheer pair of black pantyhose with a subtle sheen that reflected delicate textures under sunlight. Combined with the suit miniskirt, when the hem fluttered during movement to reveal the upper thighs, it balanced the restraint of business attire with the character's unique playfulness. I deliberately controlled the angles of my sitting and standing postures while posing; for instance, in the one-legged stance in Photo 2, shifting weight to the back leg and keeping the front leg taut allowed the camera to capture the snugness of the stockings and the curvature of the knee.
I met many fellow fans at the venue who loved this character. Some recognized Guide Tsubaki's design and smiled, asking, "Sensei, care to train together?" Hearing that line resonate multiple times on-site brought a great sense of connection. The convention atmosphere was lively with other cosplayers and passersby around, but the photographer skillfully avoided cluttered backgrounds, using a wide aperture to blur out vehicles and pedestrians and keeping visual focus entirely on me. The contrast between the green lawn and off-white curb, accented by natural side-backlight, made the shots look clean and crisp. The biggest challenge in portraying this character lies in expression management: Guide Tsubaki always gives off an unflustered, slightly sleepy, yet playfully warm greeting. Thus, I avoided overly exaggerated expressions, maintaining a gentle smile, zoning out slightly or gazing directly into the lens while coordinating hand gestures to create that approachable 'ready to guide you to the next attraction' feeling.
The entire shoot took nearly an hour, constantly fine-tuning angles and prop placements. For example, the angle of the red flag—whether draping naturally or held diagonally—changed based on the composition. Because the halo was lightweight, wind would sometimes tilt it, requiring constant repositioning. When crouching, I also had to watch the skirt hem to prevent wardrobe malfunctions; because the miniskirt was quite short, clamping my legs together or blocking with the red flag saved a lot of work in post-production. The overall styling leaned uniform-themed—combining black stockings, a miniskirt, a blazer, and white gloves to achieve both girlish charm and professional elegance. The lighting on Day 1 was fantastic; the 3:00 to 4:00 PM sunlight filtering through the leaves created even skin tones and just the right amount of highlights on the stockings. Finally, huge thanks to the photographer for the patient guidance, as well as friends who helped adjust my skirt and props. Leaving this set of photos outside the Firefly venue was a heartfelt portrayal of a character I truly love.
