This fan-made design of the Mochizuki Evening Dress is one of my absolute favorite outfits from my recent shoots. When I first got it, I was stunned by the texture of the dark navy blue satin. Paired with the pure white bandeau design and detached lantern sleeves, it visually possesses the grandeur of a classical evening gown while preserving the agility of an anime character. The gold-lined borders and the dangling gold chain at the chest are the perfect embellishments; they aren't overly complicated, but rather add texture to the solid blocks of color. Matched with Miku's iconic straight teal twintails, as well as the white flower and dark blue ribbon hair accessories on one side of her head, the silhouette of the overall styling looks incredibly distinct in front of the lens.
On the day of the shoot, we experimented with a variety of compositions and poses. The set where I sat on the step ladder beautifully displayed the drape of the dress's wide A-line skirt and the asymmetric printed teal tights on my legs, while the black block-heeled leather shoes gave me a slightly more grounded temperament amidst the playfulness. The overhead shot while lying down fully spread out the skirt. The alternating layers of dark blue and white resembled a blooming flower, and the lazy, closed-eye vibe perfectly matched the soft luster of this outfit. The photos holding the plushie not only added a bit of interactivity but also made the frames look softer and more adorable. Finally, the close-up of my upper body peeking out from the wall and the full-body standing dynamic poses showcased the off-shoulder design to its fullest, with the bow at the neck and the gold chains beautifully framing the neck and shoulder lines.
The photographer Huaiyi's control over light and shadow was very delicate, and the pure white studio background allowed all visual focus to fall onto the colors and textures of the costume. Throughout the shoot, they kept teaching me how to adjust my shoulder movements to prevent the lantern sleeves from looking bulky. When lying down, special attention also had to be paid to the placement of my hair and the way the skirt flared out. The platform shoes on my feet weren't exactly lightweight, and combined with the layered stockings and the weight of the skirt in standing poses, it was a bit of a test for my standing stability. Fortunately, the atmosphere was quite relaxed, and since I brought a plushie styled exactly like my look, my mood during the shoot was very cheerful.
When shooting this kind of Hatsune Miku fan art style evening dress, I feel the focus lies not only in the accuracy of the costume itself but also in how to express the character's vibrant energy, mixed with a touch of elegance, through the lens. As a coser, being able to wear such an exquisite outfit and turn a 2D design into a concrete representation in reality is a highly rewarding process in itself. This Cosplay photoshoot sharing is one of my most satisfying final results; the colors are clean, the character looks sharp, and every detail of the costume has been beautifully recorded. If fan-creation events are a bond for creators to exchange and share, then this shoot can be considered my earnest tribute to this classic design.
