[Alice Margatroid cosplay] A Promise of Lanterns and Pages in the Night

This set of photos taken last October had been sitting in my phone album for a long time. While organizing my gallery, I noticed many finalized cosplay shots hadn't been shared on RED yet, so taking advantage of some free time, I decided to pull out this backlog to share with everyone. The location for this photoshoot was mainly centered around night time and semi-outdoor classical architecture, which matched this outfit unexpectedly well.

Regarding the outfit, this maid-style dress has a lot of details. The white ruffled headpiece, the layered pleated neckline, along with the red sash and brown leather belt around the waist, visually elongate the body proportions. The white lace trimming along the bottom hem of the skirt is very delicate, and paired with black mid-calf socks and platform lace-up ankle boots, the overall look embodies an elegant classical charm while keeping walking comfortable. Although it was already an October night during the shoot and the temperature was a bit chilly, wrapped in this vintage outfit and focused on the lens, it was easy to get completely immersed in the mood.

The matching of props was the soul of this photoshoot. The red hardcover book and the vintage glowing lantern were key to building the storylike atmosphere in the frame. I personally love the warm yellow halo the lantern casts in the dark night; it serves as both a light source in the scene and an emotional guide. To match this mood, we specially selected a location with dense yellow flowers and classic green wooden shutters. In the nighttime garden, surrounded by scattered streetlights and blossoms, the lantern's glow fell onto the dress skirt, instantly creating a quiet, solitary, yet self-contained night atmosphere.

The photography team's mastery over light and shadow pleasantly surprised me as well. For instance, in the shot where I crouched among the flowers, strong backlighting or overhead lighting was used to illuminate floating water droplets or dust in the air, creating an almost dreamy, theatrical quality against the black night background that instantly broke the monotony of conventional night scenes. In the photo where I sat on the stone steps reading, a beam of light slanted down from above, forming a wonderful contrast of light and shade on the wall and my legs. The dark green shutters served as a background, making the whole frame feel serene, as if sitting beside an undisturbed library, conversing with words under the lamplight.

I remember that night's shooting session lasted quite long, and the lighting changed rapidly. As night deepened, the angle of street lamps shifted, and I used those fragmented light sources to complete multiple compositions. During breaks in shooting, I often looked at the prop book in my hands, pondering the core of this character. As described in certain poems, those flowing, hidden memories and voices often find a temporary shelter through pages and shadows. And through this outfit, I seemed to temporarily project myself into a story that was both familiar and distant.

In fact, cosplay photography is not merely about replicating a character's physical appearance; it is a process of integrating costume, setting, and emotion to transform two-dimensional concepts into real-life moments. Although this set of photos does not feature lavish set designs, the presence of night mist in the natural environment, the fragrance of plants, and shadows under the lamplight make it feel vibrant and alive. While sorting through these photos, I could still clearly recall the feeling of the wind blowing through my hair and dress, as well as the deep passion for representing the character. Unearthing these finalized cosplay photos forgotten in a corner of my album to re-light, color grade, and lay out feels like the best commemoration of that autumn night.
