For this Firefly cosplay in a JK uniform, considerable care went into styling the outfit. To bring Firefly's image closer to a casual everyday campus vibe, I chose a modified sailor collar shirt trimmed with grey-blue stripes at the collar and cuffs. The mint-green and white checkered ribbon bow across the chest was custom-accented with metallic and gemstone embellishments, faithfully recreating elements from the game Honkai: Star Rail. The golden floral embroideries across the shoulders and sleeves also took quite some effort to sample with the factory. The lower pleated skirt in grey-blue and yellow plaid has a crisp, structured silhouette with razor-sharp pleats that flare with vibrant energy in motion.
As for the wig, transitioning the silver-white base into a soft mint-green gradient took several days of styling to finalize. The wing-shaped hairpin atop the head, paired with the deep slate-blue bow, serves as the soul of the entire look. For makeup, to capture Firefly's cool yet tender essence, I specifically emphasized soft blush and reddish blending around the eyes. The base makeup was kept translucent, which, paired with light-colored contact lenses, softens the gaze. For the legs, I wore over-the-knee White stockings with subtle cat-paw accents, finished with glossy brown penny loafers, keeping the whole palette remarkably crisp.
The shoot took place along an indoor steel-structure footbridge, where the metal framing and reflective glass panels offered a distinctly modern backdrop. To capture the ambient blue and yellow lights coming on in the background, we readjusted the camera angles repeatedly. Shooting with a wide aperture created dreamy, melting background bokeh, making the subject pop beautifully. While posing, I tried standing while lifting the skirt hem, sitting and hugging my knees, and leaning against the glass barrier with one leg slightly raised. To catch the natural billow of the skirt, the photographer fired off rapid bursts, while I constantly engaged my core to ensure the leg lines looked flattering and effortless. In Photo 3 by the railing, the floor was actually a slightly sloped step where balance was tricky to hold, plus we had to watch out for reflections in the glass to avoid crew reflections—it really took great synergy to make it work. All in all, preparation spanned nearly half a month—from wardrobe selection, wig styling, and makeup design to the actual shoot. Despite the fatigue, seeing the finished cuts made every bit of effort worth it.
Firefly carries a profound sense of destiny in the game, so for expression management, I couldn't smile too broadly; it needed to be subtle, a bit aloof, yet gentle. Blending a JK uniform with Firefly was an attempt at aesthetic contrast—letting a character with a somber narrative feel lighter and full of vibrant life against a spring campus backdrop. I also picked fabrics that held their structure without losing softness, ensuring the garment held its shape cleanly during poses. Throughout the session, because the wig and skirt needed constant adjustments, I kept communicating closely with the makeup artist and photographer. From the angle of light to the tension of each pose, everything was refined over and over. This series preserves 2D charm while embracing real-world everyday vitality in Anime-style photography.
