Putting on this specially customized JK school uniform for Taihou from Azur Lane, I sat at a classroom desk drenched in sunlight. For this shoot, we set a tone of not chasing the game's flashy texture, but placing the character in a real youth school scene, striving to present a daily yet vibrant ecosystem.
Let's talk about this combination. A white shirt, a black bow tie, wide red-and-yellow paneled sleeves, paired with a black pleated miniskirt, black tights, and brown loafers on my feet. This school-style basic combined with the character's iconic elements instantly brings to mind that version of her in the port who is always a bit tsundere and affectionate. Especially the cuff design of this outfit, which is highly recognizableāthe red and yellow cuffs with golden buttons retain the visual impact of the game's official illustration while transforming it into a well-fitted daily wear through the tailoring of the JK uniform. When wearing it, the weight of the sleeves is actually heavier than expected, which instead makes the character's silhouette look more three-dimensional.
The lighting on the shooting day was incredibly supportive. The intense afternoon sunlight streamed obliquely through the classroom window panes, leaving distinct patterns of light and shadow on the floor and wooden desks and chairs. This natural contrast of light and dark perfectly mirrored my black, white, red, and yellow color scheme. In the first photo, I chose to sit on the chair with my legs crossed and my body leaning slightly back. This is actually a very difficult pose to keep natural, as you have to manage the security of the skirt hem while maintaining a relaxed look under the strong light. I deliberately didn't look at the camera, but rather gazed to the side, which creates a state where the character is thinking or simply zoning out. That iconic ahoge on top of my head looked exceptionally vivid under the light and shadow atmosphere, and the overall composition firmly anchored the figure in the center of the frame.
The second photo shifts to a more lively, dynamic moment. I knelt on the classroom desk, looking down to tidy up my side ponytail and red ribbon. This action wasn't actually a forced pose; it was just a casual moment of fixing my hair mid-shoot, and the photographer was sharp enough to snap it. These inadvertent moments are often the best way to showcase a character's personality. Although the frame has some lens flare due to the window's backlighting, it also perfectly enhances this hazy school vibe.
Shooting a high-quality cosplay set is actually quite physically draining, especially since indoor classroom spaces are limited, requiring repeated adjustments of angles in the narrow gaps between desks and chairs. Yet, it is precisely these imperfect edges and authentic sunlight that give the character in the photos a sense of life and breath. As a cosplayer, when you put on these clothes and step into her perspective, you can't help but want to search for traces of her past in her school life scenes. For me, this shoot was not just an external costume recreation, but an attempt to overlap with the character's state of mind. Thanks to the photographer's patient communication and the clash of ideas, the framed school memories in my mind became a reality, leaving behind a very beautiful record of classroom photos through this piece of Anime-style photography.
