[The Herta Cosplay] Genius Society Member from Honkai: Star Rail

In the universe of Honkai: Star Rail, Madam Herta's iconic confidence and intelligence have always been the key elements I wanted to convey through the lens. Choosing The Herta's look this time, I tried my best to stay as true to the original design as possible, from costume details to the overall atmosphere. When I first got this outfit, my immediate impression was that its complex layering put high demands on the wearer, but it also offered immense creative potential. Once I started putting on makeup and the wig, seeing myself in the mirror gradually overlap with the character's design gave me a subtle feeling that made me look forward to the final photos even more.

The costume has rich layers. The purple wide-brimmed witch hat paired with the silver-grey short wig captures the character's iconic visual core. The black choker and the star-shaped metal pendant at the neckline elongate the neck line, making the upper body look more upright. The black semi-transparent corset on the upper body tests the tailor's craft; the silver and purple patterns on it need to fit the body perfectly to display the best texture. The small inlaid ornament on the chest also adds a delicate sense of detail to the neckline area. My favorite part is the pair of wide, semi-transparent white silk sleeves. This slightly reflective fabric works exceptionally well under dark scene lighting, needing only subtle hand movements to create a very natural, flowing effect.

For this shoot, I specifically focused on highlighting the leg styling. The black thigh-high stockings create a wonderful visual contrast with the leather leg garters featuring metal buckles. Combined with the black knee-high high-heeled boots featuring complex multi-layered lacing, they instantly elevate the overall presence. The skirt features a tiered design spliced with white, purple, and black. Combining different fabrics gives the lower body a three-dimensional effect with real depth and layers rather than just looking flat. As for props, the huge black-patterned white wand I held was a real eye-catcher. Its openwork vortex patterns adorned with golden cross stars blend magical elegance with a sense of weight. Although the wand was indeed heavy to hold, that weight actually helped my arms form natural, relaxed lines when supporting it. The rugged metal chain hanging on the left side of the frame and the iron cage behind me gave my look a much more dangerous and mysterious aura.

Regarding the set, the photographer put a lot of thought into the concept. The massive dark iron cage paired with bold red glowing threads created an incredibly immersive atmosphere. This high-contrast color scheme of red, black, and purple didn't overpower the subject; instead, it made my white sleeves and skin tone appear even cleaner and brighter. Lighting angles during the shoot were crucial—they needed to illuminate the facial contours perfectly while keeping subtle shadows between strands of hair, giving the features a defined, deep look. In controlling expression and movement, I deliberately held back excessive emotion, maintaining a tsundere, slightly chin-raised posture. The Herta's character traits—clever yet arrogant—don't require dramatic poses; a subtle turn of the body or lightly adjusting the choker on her neck was enough to capture images that aligned perfectly with her demeanor.

During post-processing, we prioritized preserving the texture details of the fabric, such as the leather creases and the gentle luster on the sleeves. Compared to excessive skin smoothing, retaining this realistic texture better highlights the outfit's premium quality. Meanwhile, we had to be extremely careful on set with the red vines in the background to avoid snagging the lace or sleeve edges. However, in the final photos, the effect of red light bleeding through the gaps or directly shining on the skirt and boots created beautiful rim lighting, serving as a delightful visual surprise.

As the model, participating in early color matching and styling adjustments was also a fun process. Just testing different shades of purple for the costume required multiple trial fittings with the photo studio. The final choice of a cool-toned purple creates contrast with the red background light without appearing overly jarring, establishing a stable color balance with the white and black tones. Overall, both the accuracy of the costume props and the fitting background ambiance reached my expectations for this character. Collaborating with the photographer went smoothly; many shots required little verbal communication to find the best angle and shutter moment. Personally, I dislike heavily filtered or overly edited internet-style photos, preferring to convey the character's narrative feeling in specific scenarios through relatively authentic facial expressions and body posture. This photographic work represents a creative endeavor I invested heavily in recently.
