Shooting Castorice from Honkai: Star Rail this time around, the pre-production focus was largely centered on assembling the intricate costume and its complex accessories. The black thorn-shaped headpiece atop my head and the iconic, oversized pink blossom on the bodice required countless concealed snaps and bobby pins backstage to stay anchored and positioned with precision, taking endless trial adjustments before reaching the ideal visual balance. To capture the character's essence, I deliberately chose violet-pink colored contacts, enhanced the layered definition of the false lashes with soft gradation at the outer eye corners, and aimed for a cool porcelain finish in the base makeup to elevate her aloof, mystical aura.

The core ensemble is white, spliced with deep violet and black, featuring cutout and lace-up details around the waist. The fabrics are primarily satin and lightweight sheer tulle, materials that are exceptionally sensitive to illumination. To bring out that high-end, silky luster on camera, the photographer and I spent significant time fine-tuning the studio lighting. We utilized generous amounts of magenta and violet ambient fill light paired with circular background spotlights, harmonizing with her signature color palette to evoke an intoxicating, otherworldly scene. The silicone elf ears can get quite stuffy during prolonged wear, but I kept them on throughout the session to preserve total visual fidelity.

Because the framing favored medium close-ups, sweeping movements were restrained; the body language focused largely on neck-and-shoulder lines alongside delicate hand gestures. The opera-length gloves had to be ruched into flattering folds rather than looking stiff. The white ribbon bows on the skirt and sleeves could easily deform during movement, requiring continuous touch-ups between takes. I also spent a lot of time practicing her gaze in the mirror, hoping to convey that tranquil yet distant presence, subtly curling my knuckles to inject tension into the frame.

Truly, recreating this look from trimming the wig to securing every single trinket demanded immense dedication. The wig was thinned in textured layers to shed excessive bulk, and the bangs were curved to frame the face naturally. Facing the bright lights required unwavering focus to avoid blinking excessively. The studio was quite chilly, yet wearing thick thermal layers underneath was out of the question to preserve the outfit's sharp silhouette. Fortunately, the warmth from the modeling lamps and our seamless team synergy carried us through as we tested diverse angles, ultimately locking in this set that best highlights facial contours and textile textures. While the entire endeavor was physically taxing, seeing the delicate lace borders and fabric sheen in the final edits made every bit of effort worth it.
