At this Firefly ACG Expo, I finally brought Nakamachi Arale's look to life. I started preparing the wig a week in advance; this light-blonde twintails wig needed the bangs thinned out into blunt bangs across the forehead, while the buns on both sides relied on bobby pins and styling spray to maintain their fluffy volume. To recreate the character's signature features, I paired it with a black-and-yellow cat-ear headband. On one side of the bangs, I clipped on a pink cat-head pin and a barrette, with blue wavy bobby pins on the other side, creating a vibrant color collision.
For makeup, to highlight the distinct energetic vitality of Yumemita Mewtype, the base foundation was kept porcelain clean and translucent, paired with reddish-brown contact lenses to match the character's eye color. For the eye makeup, I used a dropping lower lash line technique to elongate the eye shape. Most importantly, I dotted liquid glitter eyeshadow beneath the eyes and at the inner corners, which, paired with an orange-pink glossy lip tint, created a dewy, lively glint whenever light caught it on camera. Individual cluster false eyelashes were chosen to enlarge the eyes without feeling overly heavy.
The costume consists of a sleeveless white stand-collar vest, finished with holographic iridescent reflective piping along the edges and gradient holographic buttons down the front. The inner black-and-yellow color-blocked straps had to be adjusted to the exact length to prevent slipping during the shoot. While the whole ensemble looks relatively breezy and crisp, shooting outside the convention hall was actually quite sweltering. Bringing along props and the wig meant spending a fair bit of time changing and touching up makeup on site.
Arriving on the convention floor at Firefly ACG Expo, the surrounding photographers and attendees were extraordinarily welcoming and enthusiastic. Every time I posed, the cat-ear headband and cat ears twintails swayed along, packing a strong visual punch. Since I usually study expression management for different characters when cosplaying, this time I deliberately set aside my usual posing habits before the lens, striving to capture Nakamachi Arale's canon traits and radiate that full-throttle energetic vibe. We scouted several great lighting spots around the venue exterior; combined with natural daylight, the photographic texture turned out pleasantly surprising. Exhausting as the whole process was, seeing the finished results made every bit of preliminary preparation entirely worthwhile.
