Playing the role of Uluru at the Firefly ACG Expo, the biggest challenge was actually the weight of the equipment and combating the high-temperature weather. With a gray short-sleeve base layer, layered with a black tactical vest, and a thick military-green long scarf tied around my neck, just putting everything on neatly already worked up a light layer of sweat.
To balance this hardcore Tactical gear feel, the lower body was paired with washed gray ripped denim shorts and black over-the-knee stockings, wearing brown platform loafers on the feet. This combination of heavy tactical equipment with a somewhat casual daily vibe that highlights leg lines presented a surprisingly eye-catching visual effect. The large military-green prop in my hand could be said to be the focus of the entire venue; although I was mentally prepared, I could still feel its solid weight when hoisting it onto my shoulder. Goggles perched on the forehead weren't just part of the styling, but also helped block the occasionally glaring sunlight during outdoor shooting.
The outdoor lighting at the convention site was exceptionally clear, but the foot traffic was also quite massive. Shooting in this kind of environment tests one's ability to quickly get into the zone amidst the noise. Posing required considering the display of props—such as standing on one leg, half-squatting, or single-knee kneeling actions—all requiring a tightened core, while also being careful not to let the long scarf get tangled in the tactical vest's straps, keeping movements clean and sharp.
I really love the echoing details in this styling. For instance, the yellow lenses of the goggles, the tasseled edges of the scarf, and the ID tag pendant hanging on the tactical vest all added layering to the frame when shot up close in front of the lens. The striped elastic band on the Black stockings stretched out during the crouching pose, visually playing a role in refining the leg lines while neutralizing the heavy feel brought by the tactical equipment above.
While shooting this set of pictures, the photographer gave a lot of suggestions regarding composition and snapshot timing. We looked for different angles in the plaza, avoiding the dense crowds in the background. When doing turning and arm-raising actions while carrying the launcher prop, arm stability had to be maintained so the prop wouldn't look like a burden. Actually, for portraying characters loaded with heavy tactical elements, the makeup actually needs to be clean and crisp, with moderate saturation for eye and lip makeup, focusing on highlighting skin texture and gaze focus.
The entire outfit was worn outdoors for several hours; although the loafers felt a bit tiring after walking for a long time, it was still totally worth it for the sake of the overall styling's coordination. Anime conventions are places where you can fully express your understanding of a character while sharing the atmosphere with fellow fans. Every time I pack away the props, it feels like completing a very fulfilling physical training session and character experience.
