From material selection to finally receiving it, crafting this Denia costume took about a month and a half. As a character in Wuthering Waves, Denia's costume design is exceptionally layered. The outer dark blue velvet-textured skirt is the soul of the whole outfit; to recreate that texture combining sci-fi and classical elements, I visited several physical stores when picking out the fabric. The material couldn't be too light and flowy, or it wouldn't support the metallic line decorations, but it couldn't be too heavy either since I needed to walk and pose during the outdoor shoot. The cutting of the skirt needed to be extremely precise—even a slight deviation would significantly compromise the overall draping effect. I also added golden metallic line decorations along the hem and the chest; although these details are small, they instantly enhance the exquisiteness of the entire outfit in the lens.
The off-the-shoulder design of the upper body, combined with the light blue temporary tattoo stickers carefully applied on the chest and collarbones, is the key to this styling. For the wig, I chose a style with a gradient from light pinkish-white to blue-purple, and the transition at the tips had to be very natural without any harsh cutting lines. To get this hairstyle right, I trimmed and styled the wig three times in advance, and the black lace bows on top of the head along with the hair accessories featuring blue gems were all hand-sewn so they wouldn't be blown away by the wind during outdoor shooting. Daily maintenance of the wig is also quite troublesome, especially the blue part at the ends, which easily looks messy if not paid attention to.
The black lace straps on the arms and the blue-purple gradient gloves extending from the elbows to the fingertips presented quite a challenge. The glove material is relatively form-fitting, so I had to pay special attention to the curvature of my fingertips when moving, otherwise it easily looked stiff. The legs feature tights with purple and blue abstract graffiti patterns, with designs somewhat resembling star trails or fluctuating water ripples. Paired with black glossy small leather shoes, the overall visual creates a strong cyberpunk mixed with abandoned industrial style vibe. Since my legs are relatively well-proportioned, choosing this kind of patterned stockings allowed me to better showcase the aesthetic of my leg lines.
The shooting location was chosen in an abandoned factory area featuring massive, mottled and rusted metal cylinders. The on-site lighting was actually quite complex; natural light came from outside the windows, but the indoor structure was relatively dark, so reflectors were used to brighten the subject's face. During the shoot, I sat on the steps on the ground, leaning my body against the pillar with my legs slightly bent and one hand extended forward—a pose that effectively showcased the lines of the gloves and arms. Adjusting the pose was also quite strenuous because the skirt was very long and prone to being stepped on by accident, requiring constant sorting during rest breaks.
The temperature on the day of the shoot was somewhat muggy. Wearing this multi-layered skirt set in an abandoned factory without air conditioning made the perceived temperature even higher. To keep the makeup intact, I kept holding a small fan to cool down during breaks, and the frequency of touch-ups was much higher than usual. When composing the frame, the photographer intentionally utilized the massive rusted cylinders and cool-toned natural light of the factory to build a wasteland sci-fi atmosphere. I sat on the ground and adjusted through about a dozen angles; my knees felt a bit sore from long hours of bending, but to present the most natural state, every time I adjusted my pose, I would re-arrange the stockings on my legs to ensure the pattern direction flowed smoothly in the lens. From fitting to final completion, every link of this photo set is the result of everyone's joint efforts, and I'm also thrilled to fully present this styling.
Outdoor shooting truly tests physical strength and patience—from makeup and wig styling to finding angles on-site, it took nearly six hours. However, the moment I saw the final photos, I felt that all the hard work spent repeatedly adjusting clothing details and confirming the wig styling was completely worth it. I hope this visual presentation allows everyone to feel the charm of the character.
