This set of looks for Tsukatsuki Rio finally resulted in satisfying convention photos under the light of the Chiyuanxiong Comic Convention outdoor venue. Compared to the convenience of precisely controlling a single light source in studio shoots, natural light in the outdoor venue of a comic con is actually more challenging, but it is also easier to capture that pure texture and translucency. Especially when paired with black tights and a suit jacket, the light and shadow transitions are much softer than under harsh light.
Let's talk about the preparation of this costume first. The black suit jacket is relatively well-fitted without the heaviness of specific shoulder pads, matching the crisp yet slightly student-like atmosphere of the character. The inner layer is a high-neck pure white base top; the height of the neckline happens to highlight the lines of the neck, making the visual effect of the black-and-white contrast more prominent. Below is a black pleated short skirt with a moderate length, and pairing it with black tights makes the extension of the legs feel very natural. Speaking of stockings, this time I selected a style with a rather thin and matte texture; under the capture of the lens, it can both show the skin tone and beautifully present the foot details after taking off the high heels.
The most eye-catching accessory is none other than this halo bracket on top of the head. To ensure the angle and stability, I made an extra layer of support structure inside the wig, so that even when walking around in a high-traffic outdoor venue like a comic con, it doesn't easily tilt due to wind or slight collisions. The white hair clips can actually rotate and adjust, used to fix the direction of the front bangs. Besides these, the nameplate decoration with a pink base hanging on the side of the waist is absolutely a plus point; its hollowed-out font design is very sophisticated, instantly giving the originally pure black-and-white uniform a unique emblem belonging to the character. The position of the ID badge was also repeatedly adjusted to ensure that the card holder wouldn't bend when crouching or sitting, so I constantly kept an eye on this detail during the shoot.
Regarding the dynamic of this shoot, the most core concept actually revolves around the interactive action of "taking off shoes." On my feet, I wore a pair of black thick-soled patent leather Mary Jane high heels. The soles are relatively heavy, and walking around all day at a comic con is actually quite tiring. Therefore, when the photographer suggested that I sit on the high stool nearby to rest and then take off the shoes to hold them in my hand or place them directly on the ground, I instantly felt it was an excellent idea. The action of taking off shoes breaks the constraints originally brought by being fully dressed in a suit, adding a touch of laziness and ease to the frame. The combination of black thick-soled shoes and black tights is inherently a classic match, and letting the shoes leave the feet to be placed on the greyish-white floor tiles forms a contrasting visual. This composition of still life interacting with the figure makes the character no longer just purely striking a pose, but rather allows a flow of emotions.
In terms of posing, naturally crossing one's legs while sitting on a high stool, or letting one foot naturally hang down with the toe lightly touching the ground, can beautifully showcase the leg lines and the wrapping nature of the tights. To highlight this sense of extension, the photographer intentionally lowered the camera position, utilizing a wide-angle lens to slightly stretch the visual depth of field, making the legs appear more slender. Combined with me resting my chin on one hand or naturally resting it on my knee, my entire demeanor presents a calm, cool feeling, which fits this character's setting beautifully. The glass curtain wall of the outdoor venue brought soft diffused light, making the skin tone look natural and the shadow wrinkles of the pleated skirt highly three-dimensional.
The Chiyuanxiong Comic Convention outdoor venue itself was actually quite lively, and occasionally passersby would enter the frame in the background, but we chose a relatively quiet spot with large floor-to-ceiling windows and white pillars as our shooting point. The reflection on the grey floor tiles in this area is quite obvious, drawing long shadows of the high heels and the stool, increasing the spatial sense of the frame. During the shooting process, there were actually many small interludes, such as fellow fans watching from time to time around us, or the wind suddenly blowing the skirt hem and hair, but these elements conversely gave the finished photos a bit of live vividness belonging to the convention scene. When checking the returned photos, I feel that the texture of black tights paired with a black suit jacket is truly superb, without overly strong reflections or the plastic feel of excessive post-processing, overall presenting a comfortable, durable, and attractive daily atmosphere.
Being able to smoothly complete the convention photos shoot for this set of works can be counted as handing in a satisfying answer sheet for the preparation stage of the past few days. When putting on makeup, I specifically did subtraction on the eye makeup, without heavy eyeshadow accumulation, relying on the inner eyeliner to slightly elongate the eye shape, and then put on red colored contact lenses to grab the soul of the character at first glance. Although the details are tedious, the final presented effect still makes one feel that all the effort was not in vain. Every real-world shoot is a deepening of the understanding of the character, and every movement during the posing process is an attempt to get closer to the character itself. This is what makes Anime-style photography so fulfilling for cosplay.
