[Komeiji Satori & Komeiji Koishi Cosplay] Touhou Project's Subterranean Animism Sisters: On-Site Anime Convention Photoshoot

The photoshoot plan for this anime convention finally included the sister duo from Subterranean Animism. Bringing along Satori and Koishi's exclusive Fumo plushies, we captured two sets of solo photos directly utilizing the live event lighting. The overall makeup and styling schedule was tighter than expected, but the final result turned out to be quite satisfying.

Both the pink and light-green wigs were trimmed and styled anew. The green hair in Picture 2 was paired with a dark gray wide-brimmed bowler hat, with the ribbon bow on the hat band echoing the color scheme of the top. Key character elements on the outfit had to be recreated meticulously—such as the cables connected to the metallic red sphere in Picture 1, and the cables wrapped around the front connected to the metallic blue sphere in Picture 2. This unique physical connection method actually puts heavy demands on the prop's structural support. To ensure the curves of the cables looked as natural as possible, flexible shaping wire was embedded inside, allowing them to spring back quickly even after being bumped while walking around the convention.

Lighting at an anime convention is usually complex, with natural light interwoven with hall overhead lights. To capture skin texture and wig luster effectively, the lighting technician set up a lovely rim light from the upper side, giving hair strand details richer layering. The white lace trim at the collar, the black lace trim at the cuffs, and the small heart-shaped knot secured at the chest were all crafted to closely match the playful yet mysterious style of the original character design. Since the yellow blouse in Picture 2 is relatively bright, it popped out much easier against the background shelves and merchandise in the hall. We specifically selected this angle during shooting, with a gently raised hand and a serene expression, creating a perfectly fitting atmosphere.

Beyond the cosplayers themselves, the pair of Fumo plushies served as wonderful partners for the photoshoot. Holding them up in front of the lens in the same frame added an extra touch of cuteness to the pictures. In Picture 1, because the plushie was still in its transparent packaging bag, we took advantage of the plastic reflections to refract light and shadow, increasing visual depth while evoking an authentic vibe of just buying merch or carrying plushies around the convention. Shooting outdoors versus inside exhibition booths involves different priorities—indoor convention halls tend to have flat lighting, relying more on the costume's color contrast and makeup to grab visual focus. The color palettes of these two outfits balance warm/cool and light/dark tones, keeping the overall look visually engaging.

When capturing the pose in Picture 2, we had to carefully control the angle between the hat brim and the face to prevent shadows from blocking the eyes, while ensuring the green contact lenses and overall makeup stayed clear. The curves at the edges of the wig also affected whether the silhouette looked natural, so we spent considerable time tidying it up before shooting. The overall experience at the convention was very fulfilling. Although finding a relatively clean angle in the crowd to highlight the main subject took some time, cosplaying character settings I love and discussing makeup and props with friends who share the same passion was a great reward in itself. This work serves as a summary of my recent photoshoots, where I personally took part in everything from pre-production prep to on-site lighting coordination.
