When shooting this Remilia cosplay, I spent a lot of time pondering the shooting angles and visual language. As everyone knows, character designs in Touhou Project are truly distinctive: Remilia, as a vampire centuries old yet possessing the appearance of a child, has an enticing contrast. To faithfully recreate this character, I custom-ordered this intricate pink Gothic Lolita dress. The layers of lace and ruffles are plentiful, taking quite some time just to put on and take off, not to mention adjusting the headdress and securing the bluish-purple twin tails. Because the dominant red tone was so strong, the photographer arranged ample red lighting that bathed the skirt hem and the scythe, creating a texture as if enveloped beneath a scarlet moonlight.
Because the red long-handled scythe prop was much heavier than it looked, holding it while maintaining a twisted torso pose placed immense weight on the hand supporting me on the ground. A red carpet was laid out on the floor during the shoot, seamlessly blending with the red skirt and red light to form a moody, Dark style Gothic atmosphere. Honestly, the most difficult aspect of cosplaying this character lay in facial expression control—it required projecting that subtle nocturnal arrogance and effortless poise; the gaze couldn't be too lively, instead needing a touch of vacant detachment and dangerous edge. Although the pose was exhausting, seeing the striking red-and-black contrast in the final photos—that brilliant crimson shining even in deep darkness—made all the effort completely worthwhile.
This Cosplay photography session also gave me a fresh understanding of coordinating with the photographer. To capture these high-angle overhead and tilted compositions, we repeatedly adjusted body angles to ensure that body contours and skirt layering appeared as natural as possible on camera, which was a real test of core strength and arm support. Such classical, Dark style works heavily rely on the setting's vintage props for atmosphere—like the white mannequin torso, the white bust sculpture, and the black-and-white chess pieces in the background—transforming the frame from plain photography into an elaborately staged narrative scene. Everyone was thrilled once shooting wrapped up; the atmosphere of the final images fully met our expectations. This photo set serves not only as a heartfelt homage to the character, but also as great practice in mastering my own modeling control during Cosplay photography shoots.
