The moment I put on this blonde wig and blue denim shorts, it felt as if I had truly traveled into the world of Dragon Ball Super. For this shoot, I specifically chose a city rooftop as the background, with the concrete jungle behind me, which highly resembles those urban battlegrounds lined with skyscrapers in the anime. The combination of a white T-shirt and denim shorts looks simple, but it is actually the essence of recreating Android 18's daily outfit—simple, crisp, and completely unconstrained in movement. To capture a more combat-oriented frame for this Rooftop photography session, I specially brought a wooden chair as a prop; whether stepping on it with one foot to strike a defensive stance or squatting down ready to exert force, I did my best to find the posture of a "martial artist." The wind was very strong, blowing the wig and the hem of my clothes all over the place, which instead gave the photos a sense of authentic dynamic movement, far from the stiffness of forced posing.
Actually, the hardest part of shooting this character isn't the costume, but the demeanor. Android 18's vibe of being lazy yet confident, and completely indifferent to everything, needs to be conveyed through expressions and body language. I tried to lower my center of gravity, empty my gaze a bit, or look into the distance with a side profile to give the frame a stronger sense of narrative. The natural light used this time, with the soft afternoon sky, perfectly captured the skin texture and the folds of the clothes. In post-processing, I only finetuned the colors, trying to maintain the cool tone of the original photo, so that when this 2D daily life character lands in the 3D world, there is still an illusion of "real existence."
Every time I shoot such a classic character, I seriously study the details of the original work, repeatedly comparing everything from the layers of the hairstyle to the length of the cuffs. Although I can't achieve 100% complete restoration, I hope to present the Android 18 I understand in front of the lens—powerful, casual, yet without losing feminine charm. When the rooftop wind blows over, there's truly an illusion that I'm launching a Ki blast (laughs). Doing cosplay is just like this: using costumes and lenses to build a mini-universe of your own, turning a beloved character into a tangible moment. I'm quite satisfied with this set of photos myself; the tension of the movements, the layers of the background, and that unique openness of a city rooftop are all integrated into it. I hope sharing this can make everyone feel that characters in Dragon Ball Super are not just flat drawings, but can also have warmth and depth.
