The close-up portrait photos for this Dolia cosplay are finally ready! From the initial makeup concept to the final photos, the whole process was actually much more intricate than imagined.
This character's iconic high-saturation blue wig is extremely eye-catching, but that was precisely where the most effort was needed early on. To recreate that flowing, water-like texture, I selected a fluffy blue wig with bright highlights. Beyond adjusting the direction of the signature ahoge (hair tuft) on top, I had to weave white pearl strands of various sizes through the hair. Securing these pearls on the wig was delicate work—ensuring the distribution looked natural and effortless while preventing them from catching or falling when turning my head. Moreover, fine glitter was added to the wig, producing a shimmering, ripple-like effect under the studio lights, which serves as a highlight of the entire look.
In terms of makeup, to match the character's oceanic charm, I chose highly saturated blue contact lenses. To keep them from looking jarring, the eye makeup required restraint; the focus was on amplifying the depth of the gaze through translucent eyeshadow and precise eyeliner rather than piling on heavy colors. The base makeup needed a clean, flawless texture, with cool pinkish-white tones nicely complementing the blue wig, while a natural nude pink was chosen for lip color. This made the overall facial aesthetic softer without looking cluttered—a true test of technique under close-up lens photography.
The neck accessories in this styling were also a finishing touch. The blue beaded necklace echoing the hair color, along with a white teardrop pendant in the center, not only filled the negative space around the neck but also enriched the layers of the whole marine style outfit. The semi-transparent blue shimmer tulle draped over the shoulders and neck, along with the large pearl chain beside it, formed a visual resonance with the small pearls in the hair. This oceanic ambiance created by pearls, tulle, and glitter served as the core foundation for this shoot.
During the actual shoot, because of the wig's volume and the restriction of pearl decorations, turning my head was somewhat limited. Therefore, this set of portrait shots focused on frontal and subtle side profile compositions, allowing direct eye contact with the camera as much as possible. The texture presented in the lens also placed high demands on lighting, ensuring the wig's sheen and facial shadows were balanced just right. Though these are close-up portraits, a cosplayer's commitment to complete styling manifests in every tiny detail—from hair strand orientation and pearl positioning down to the wig's highlight reflection points—to portray a complete ocean elf persona.
These are my shooting experiences and styling insights for this Dolia cosplay. Freezing the character's inherent spirit through the lens as part of my casual cosplay journey brings a tremendous sense of achievement.
