Stepping onto the outdoor walkway at Firefly D3 in this black evening gown, even the sultry heat in the air seemed filtered through the layered skirt and black tights outfit.
This time, I cosplayed Misaki in her dress version from Blue Archive. Although Firefly is primarily an indoor convention, the weather on D3 was absolutely perfect for outdoor shooting. The soft, diffuse light from the overcast sky rendered the textures of the black lace and velvet fabrics exceptionally well.
This costume has a lot of thought put into its details. The neckline features a halter-neck lace patchwork design that retains the character's dignified elegance while adding a touch of lightness through the off-the-shoulder cut. The semi-translucent, puffy sleeves around the arms visually balanced the lines of the upper body. The most eye-catching highlight is definitely the bright blue artificial rose at the waist, creating a striking color contrast against the vast black, breaking the monotony while echoing Misaki's original design.
The headpiece was also custom-made; the semi-circular cutout crescent accessory is crafted from lightweight material so wearing it for extended periods wouldn't strain the cervical spine too much. Paired with straight black bangs, long flowing hair, a side bun, and long sideburns framing the face, I felt very satisfied with the overall accuracy of the look.
For shoes, I specifically chose black pointed high heels. Walking in them was indeed physically demanding, but for the elongated leg lines, that bit of hard work was completely worth it. The most unexpected little surprise was when capturing a glance back over my shoulder—the red shoe soles inadvertently exposed added an intriguing subtle detail to the head-to-toe black ensemble.
As for props, I prepared a long-stemmed black rose this time. It served as a fantastic tool for managing posture and mood—useful for maintaining balance when lifting one leg, and perfect for holding loosely when seated. Working with the photographer was effortless; rather than asking for overly forced poses, he snapped many natural moments while I was relaxing and adjusting my posture.
For example, when sitting on the metal railing along the riverside walkway, the photographer used the walkway's perspective to create depth. In the shots where I stood on one leg holding the black rose, the voluminous curve of the skirt was fully captured. The matte texture of the black stockings under outdoor natural light created rich, layered contrast with the black mesh frills under the skirt.
Returning to the theme, Misaki from Blue Archive carries a cool and mysterious aura in her temperament. However, in the joyful offline atmosphere of Firefly ACG Expo, doing an outdoor photoshoot in a formal dress naturally brought a charming gap-moe contrast. From morning to afternoon, every crease of this dress kept reminding me of the character's presence.
In fact, dress cosplay tests standing posture and grace the most; being too stiff loses the character's soul, while being too casual ruins the outfit's refinement. My personal habit is to walk through a few model steps in front of the mirror before shooting to find the most flattering angles for the lace drape and skirt flare.
Although there was plenty of foot traffic outside Firefly D3, everyone was very friendly and didn't disrupt our shooting rhythm at all. As Firefly ACG Expo photos, this set not only documents the character's look but also completely presents the dimensional silhouette and delicate accessories of this black dress.
Although preparation time for photography and makeup was tight, the final result achieved exactly what I wanted. It stands as one of my most satisfying outdoor anime cosplay photosets recently.
