The Convention photos featuring this combination of a black sailor suit and wooden sword from the CICF (China International Comic Festival) are finally sorted out. From initially deciding to do this Aisaka Taiga cosplay to preparing the wig, costume, and props, the entire process took about two weeks. The wig was a custom-made long wavy orange wig; to ensure fullness at the crown, hair padding was added inside so that the drape of the bangs and long side hair would fall naturally. The black sailor uniform was carefully selected, focusing especially on the fabric texture of the white collar stripes and necktie.
On the day of the shoot, the Guangzhou convention was packed with people, so we deliberately chose late afternoon to shoot on the outdoor streets to take advantage of the backlighting. The photographer mastered the light and shadow wonderfully: golden evening light hit the back of my head, enveloping me in a warm halo. Shooting on the crosswalk, we tried several poses—such as gripping the wooden sword horizontally with both hands, kneeling on one knee propping up with the wooden sword, and crossing arms while turning sideways. The wooden sword carried some real weight in hand; posing with it required steadying my wrists to keep the stance crisp rather than slack.
Regarding pose selection, considering the character's impulsive and tsundere traits from Toradora!, the motions were kept sharp and decisive. Standing face-forward with hands on hips, the thigh lines and proportions with Black over-the-knee socks looked fantastic. The backlit shots captured the exact atmospheric vibe we aimed for. Facing the lens, the gaze needed to be focused and contained, maintaining a slightly fierce and sharp edge. As for props, the diamond pattern on the pommel of the wooden sword was a specific detail we intentionally sought out.
Although convention conditions were limited, fortunately, several great candid snapshots were captured. During the shoot, we had to manage wind blowing the hair around; pairing the sailor suit with a pleated skirt and Black over-the-knee socks is a timeless combination that yielded a high rate of stunning shots against the street backdrop. Now I can finally share these Cosplay event photos and talk about my insights into bringing this character to life. The results from this CICF shoot completely met all my expectations.
