Catching the second day of the China International Comics Festival (CICF), this early-ordered Sphene outfit finally had its first on-site fitting. Since I've always loved Sphene's design in Final Fantasy XIV—cool and elegant with a touch of pride—I intentionally focused the styling and makeup on the eye makeup and expression control this time, hoping to restore at least a few fractions of her aloof temperament from the CGs.
Let's talk about the costume for this exhibition daily life. The inner layer is a small white puffy skirt, combined with the layered light yellow-green outer gown hem. Lightweight fabrics with a nice drape were selected for the overall material. This way, when walking or lifting the skirt, the aqua-blue ruffles along the hem have a beautiful sense of fluidity. The metallic emblem at the waist is my favorite part; it took a lot of time to make this decoration. Although it looks highly intricate, its weight is actually manageable and didn't hinder my movements too much. The small green stand-up collar at the neck, paired with the detached white sleeves on the arms, visually adds layers, ensuring the overall coordination doesn't look too thin.
The white tights deserve a special shout-out; this combination of material and color yields an excellent diffuse reflection effect under top lighting, making the leg lines look very smooth. However, there was an unavoidable little episode in today's coordination—the shoes. Because the originally custom-ordered, more accurate shoes are still in the final stages of production, to catch the convention slots, I had to temporarily make do with these yellow-and-green color-blocked flats. Although they look reasonably harmonious in the photos, the soles are actually a bit stiff and the openings easily rub my feet. If you look closely at the shoes and socks, there are indeed discrepancies from the original design. Once I switch to that specialized pair, the overall presence can definitely be upgraded to another level.
Thanks to the photographer Jianghuo for the on-site snapshots; the effect of the top lighting hitting my body turned out unexpectedly well. The lighting gave the edges of the clothes a sliver of highlight contour, capturing that sense of queenly pride. Honestly, deciding to portray Sphene wasn't just because the costume is beautiful, but more due to her detached yet independent temperament. Before this shoot, I spent a long time studying the in-game cutscenes; her micro-expressions and the angle of her chin all exuded confidence. This on-site shoot also served as a test for my posture management.
The crowd at the venue today was highly dense. Although there was indoor air conditioning, this costume has many layers, so walking around all morning still felt a bit stuffy, forcing me to find gaps to snap a few pictures in well-lit spots. Fortunately, the angle and aperture of this photo coordinated perfectly, capturing the flair of the skirt hem beautifully unfurled. The atmosphere at CICF is always fantastic, and fellow fans present were highly loving; everyone's enthusiasm made me feel all the hard work was entirely worth it.
Honestly, doing cosplay is often far more than simply putting on a piece of clothing. Every time you portray a character, you have to decipher their personality, stance, and gaze. Despite various imperfections (like the shoes this time), every shoot is an opportunity for self-improvement. Especially for characters from classic works like Final Fantasy XIV, the requirements for the character's posture and eyes are very high. The lack of early preparation this time conversely provides a very clear direction for improvement in future accurate restorations. If I can meet players with similar tastes at the exhibition to exchange game understandings and character insights, that would be even more fascinating.
For now, I'll just release this single teaser photo for everyone to get a feel of it, marking my initial debut at this CICF event. The subsequent formal photoset will be thoroughly edited; once those more accurate shoes arrive, I'll find an outdoor location to shoot a grand scene. I hope to more perfectly present the character's unhurried, elegant, and confident atmosphere by then. This attempt gave me a more concrete grasp of the costume's details, and I look forward to the final results of the completed photoshoot.
