The cosplay for this convention chose Kazami Yuuka from Touhou Project, mainly attracted by the summer beauty of flowers, birds, wind, and moon in Touhou Kaeinzuka. To faithfully restore the temperament of this flower yokai, a lot of thought went into the clothing details. This red-and-black plaid dress adopts a multi-layered skirt design, with each layer spliced with wide white lace. The black leather waist cincher at the waist features metal buckles and straps, which can visually tighten the waistline. To match the summer theme, the skirt body, waist cincher, and hair are dotted with bright yellow sunflowers and little daisies, and I also carried a bamboo basket prop filled with sunflowers in my hand.
The wig was trimmed to chin-length, dyed grass green, and the bangs received a slight layered treatment. For the eye makeup, to match the red contact lenses, warm red of the same color family was used to blend the eyeshadow, the lip makeup chose vintage matte red, and the base makeup was kept fair and clean to highlight the character's cold yet natural setting.
Although the air conditioning was on inside the venue on the day of the Chengdu convention, wearing this heavy dress plus the waist cincher and moving through the crowd quickly made me sweat. To present a better effect, I tried several different poses during the Convention photos shoot: holding my chest with one hand, slightly turning my head to look at the flowers, or lifting the skirt hem and flower basket while walking forward. The photographer clicked the shutter quickly, capturing many moments of the skirt hem fluttering. The high ceiling and reflective floor of the convention venue really tested the lighting, but fortunately, the lighting for the Convention photos was very uniform, allowing the texture of the red-and-black plaid and the edges of the white lace to be clearly displayed.
When wearing this outfit, I think about Kazami Yuuka's state across the four seasons. She is originally a powerful and lonely yokai, and in the setting of Touhou Kaeinzuka, her relationship with flowers is extremely close. Although this dress leans toward a sweet style, through the combination of the black waist cincher and dark red plaid, it retains a strong and unapproachable part of the character's personality. The small sunflowers and daisies on the headwear perfectly dot the vitality of summer.
Walking in the venue carrying that bamboo basket, I was often stopped by passersby or photographers asking if they could take a few pictures. I would also carefully adjust the angle of the basket to ensure the sunflowers were always facing the lens. From trying on clothes, custom-making the wig, to walking the convention floor in full makeup on the day, although the whole process was tiring, seeing the strong color contrast between red, green, and yellow in the final photos, as well as the layering of the lace on the skirt hem, made all the preparations worthwhile. I hope these Convention photos can convey that warm, passionate, and vibrant feeling of summer.
