Putting on this outfit for Ukinami Yuzuha Cosplay, I pressed the shutter against the backdrop of industrial-style architecture at Hanggang Park. This red-and-black large umbrella is indeed the most eye-catching "practical weapon" in the entire gear. When opened, it not only serves the practical purpose of shading from the sun but also coordinates with the character's body language to strike a cool and sharp attacking stance. The white piping along the ribs gives the umbrella a more designed feel under the lens. The outdoor light on the shooting day was quite strong, and this massive canopy perfectly blocked the harsh overhead light, softening the light on my face and allowing me to control my expressions more calmly. The wig features highly saturated colors, styled into twin tails and paired with the iconic hair scrunchies and headphone accessories, making the accuracy of the styling very high.
The entire look is dominated by a light pink loose jacket and a black short skirt. To avoid the easy wrinkling of cotton-linen fabrics, a composite fabric with a certain crispness was specially chosen, keeping the tailored silhouette sharp and three-dimensional even when standing naturally. The bow at the neckline and the waist-tie section underwent heat-setting, so they won't easily deform when the wind blows during the outdoor shoot. The prop team put a lot of thought into this; the handle grip of the umbrella has an anti-slip treatment, and the center of gravity was counterweighted, making it less exhausting to hold high with one hand or lean against the railings, which is truly friendly for a long-duration outdoor shoot.
Hanggang Park's industrial heritage buildings feature large areas of glass curtain walls and concrete pillars. The cold, harsh gray-black background perfectly sets off the eye-catching red, white, and pink color scheme of the character. During the shoot, I tried many camera angles, and finally chose to stand by the railing on the second floor. Using a high high-angle view, I propped the long-handled umbrella diagonally at my side, allowing the geometric patterns on the umbrella surface to echo the architectural lines behind me. During post-processing, I found that the effect captured by utilizing the building's own sense of depth is indeed much more natural than simply compositing in front of a green screen.
In terms of makeup, the focus is on the fine details of the eye makeup. Red eyeshadow was appropriately applied to the lower eyelids to create a visual progression with the hair color, while an ultra-fine eyeliner emphasized the upturned outer corners of the eyes. The lip color selected is a matte shade, keeping the overall makeup from looking too heavy, which better suits the character's slightly youthful and serene temperament. Throughout the entire preparation, the choice of costume, props, makeup, hair, and scene represents the cosplayer's understanding of the character. During the shoot, I constantly adjusted my poses to ensure the black metal decoration on the tip of the umbrella, the collar, and even the folds on the skirt restored the design sheet as much as possible for this piece of Cosplay photography. This shooting experience at Hanggang Park made me feel that an excellent cosplay work is not just a piling up of costumes and wigs, but also tests the utilization of the scene and the capturing of the character's temperament. Carrying such a highly practical prop and standing in a well-layered outdoor space is a very interesting thing in itself.
