For this Touhou Project Flandre Scarlet Cosplay shoot, we chose a Gothic Lolita dress dominated by red and black tones. The dress is made of red jacquard fabric, trimmed along the edges with black lace. The white ruffled neckline and red rose brooch on the chest make for tasteful accents, while pearl chains and black ribbon bows adorn the waist. To complement the outfit, I picked a red-and-black lace bonnet decorated with translucent red tulle veils and floral ornaments.
The golden-blonde wig was styled into a wavy bob with neat, blunt bangs. Red contact lenses gave my gaze a sharper look. For makeup, I applied reddish-brown eyeshadow, a darker crimson lipstick, and painted my nails in a matching red.
We prepared plenty of props for the shoot: a handheld birdcage coated in gold glitter paint; a black rectangular tail with a heart-shaped tip; and a yellow teddy bear painted with bloody stains, wrapped in white lace and red cloth to evoke a fragile yet eerie cuteness. We also brought a multi-arm crystal candelabra to create a vintage, moody atmosphere.
To accentuate leg lines, this series paired Black stockings with red bow accessories at the ankles and black platform shoes. Sitting down helps elongate leg proportions, as does stretching the legs out over the carpet. The photographer used side lighting and warm backlighting to bring out the rich texture of the red velvet sofa. The ambiance needed to be both lavish and slightly gloomy. The shoot wasn't easy, as maintaining that mischievous yet mysterious gaze was demanding, and moving around in the heavy, layered skirt was quite cumbersome.
When shooting similar themes, pay close attention to light reflections on hosiery. Choosing matte Black stockings under warm lighting better highlights the three-dimensional contours of the legs without overly shiny reflections ruining the Gothic Lolita aesthetic. Additionally, mind the drape of the skirt to create a sharp visual contrast between the Black stockings and the red dress hem. Attention to fine details directly influences the final images—from the pattern of the colored contacts to the texture of the bloodstained bear, everything requires thorough preparation beforehand. Trying various poses, such as sitting on the floor looking up into the camera and leaning back on the sofa, showcased the overall design of the costume much better. I hope the Dark fairy tale atmosphere of this work conveys the character's unique allure.
