On Day 3 of the July Firefly ACG Expo in Guangzhou, braving temperatures well over 30°C outside the venue, we shot this set of convention photos for Phrolova from Wuthering Waves. I had been prepping for this character for quite a while, and successfully wrapping the set today made the whole journey well worth documenting.
The styling and makeup this time focused heavily on atmospheric mood. The pale cyan-blue wig required immense caution during styling; any carelessness would make it look frizzy, so I applied generous amounts of hair oil before heading out. Fortunately, its texture looked remarkably clean under outdoor daylight. Crimson contact lenses paired with red-toned lipstick brought a touch of vibrant complexion, while white lace trim was carefully adhered beneath my left eye—the most time-consuming step of the makeup, requiring seamless adhesion without tugging at the delicate skin around the eye.
The outfit is a white off-the-shoulder dress paired with detached lace sleeves; the chest badge and the red ribbon cinched at the waist serve as the primary visual anchors of the look. The long-stemmed red floral prop in hand was crafted from the same materials as the hair accessory, consuming an entire tube of glue just to anchor the petals firmly. Because the skirt has substantial fullness, smoothing out the layered draping took patient effort, and the ribbons tended to twist while walking, requiring multiple adjustments right before shooting.
The shooting spot was set before a lush green backdrop. Summer sunlight in Guangzhou is intense, but fortunately, photographer @Qingshu wielded exquisite control over light and shadow. We deliberately scouted a side-backlit angle to let the sunlight graze one shoulder and cheek, sculpting fine dimensional highlights, while the deep green foliage blurred softly through a wide aperture, providing the perfect visual contrast to elevate the white gown and crimson bloom. The downward glance toward the flower in the second shot was captured after standing under the blazing sun for quite a while, gradually calibrating my emotions to seize that natural, unforced melancholy.
Foot traffic at the convention floor was massive, and navigating the crowd in this attire was undeniably stifling. I touched up my makeup multiple times while keeping vigilant watch so the wig wouldn't get jostled. Yet meeting so many fellow enthusiasts on-site, discussing character interpretations during breaks, and checking out everyone's convention photos fostered an amazing atmosphere. Since I don't get many opportunities for outdoor shoots, I always strive to refine every detail at conventions. Being able to assemble this set smoothly, with satisfying lighting and framing throughout, feels great. In convention photos, harnessing natural light is often far more vital than heavy color grading; getting the makeup and wardrobe dialed in during pre-production drastically elevates the yield of stunning shots.
The props and wig performed flawlessly today, leaving no regrets for these convention photos. This red, white, and green palette shines brilliantly outdoors, needing no artificial heavy filters—retaining the authentic feel of natural light is more than enough.
