Shooting this Honor of Kings Gongsun Li Smoke of Partings skin cosplay at Eling Park in Chongqing was a truly extraordinary experience.
Chongqing's natural atmosphere brings its own cinematic filter, and inside Eling Park, we found a courtyard brimming with traditional Chinese garden architecture. Mist hovering over the water, stepping stones, miniature bonsai, and whitewashed walls beneath grey roof tiles resonated flawlessly with the poetic essence of the Smoke of Partings skin. Ambient light was relatively dim on the day, so to carve out the subject with crisp presence, we used artificial fog combined with backlighting to lend rich, dramatic dimension to the frame.
The Smoke of Partings attire is tailored with incredible fluidity—the ink-wash gradient flowing sleeves in blue and white and the billowing hemline shine brilliantly in motion. To channel the character's temperament, I adapted my movement and poses accordingly. Photo 1 features a still standing pose atop a stone pillar over the pond, emphasizing an aloof, solitary grace. Photo 2 shifts to a close-up candid: as sunlight filtered through the tree leaves overhead, I naturally raised a hand to touch my hair ornament. Given the high-slit design of the skirt, I experimented with lifting my chest and slightly raising one leg, which not only smoothed out the silhouette of the garment, but also tastefully highlighted my leg lines and figure while preserving the character's playful charm. The weight of the wig and animal-ear headpieces was well-balanced, staying firmly secured even when moving around outdoors. For makeup, the focus was placed on the blue colored contacts and eye makeup to match the character's distinctive heterochromia lore. While the prop sword in hand was lightweight, wielding it still demanded solid core strength to maintain balance.
Shooting outdoors requires conquering numerous environmental challenges, especially insects and heavy humidity. Between takes, bug spray had to be reapplied continuously, and the mist-slicked stone pillars required immense caution with every step. But seeing the final images made every hardship worthwhile. In color grading, Photo 1 preserves a cool-toned cyan-grey wash with shifting warm accents, while Photo 2 boosts contrast and skin luminosity, striking an organic balance between realism and fantasy. The entire endeavor was not merely completing a cosplay shoot, but immersing myself deeply in the character's soul within an authentic Eastern garden. I hope this photo set conveys that distinctive classical charm to everyone.
