[Komi Shoko cosplay] Komi Can't Communicate: Golden Floral red background cheongsam & Words Left Unsaid

Pairing the red background cheongsam with golden florals and long black twintails, considerable thought was poured into the details of this Komi Shoko cosplay. To recreate Komi-san's social anxiety blended with a hint of cool detachment from Komi Can't Communicate, I experimented extensively with wig styling and makeup. The base makeup was kept as clean and translucent as possible; paired with blue contact lenses, the eye makeup was kept subtle to preserve a detached yet innocent gaze. The bangs were trimmed straight and blunt, while the Long straight black hair draping down the sides was smoothed and set incrementally from hair extensions. To ensure the strands looked natural, the flow of each lock was repeatedly adjusted. The pearl hair ornament on top served as an exquisite accent—not overly opulent, yet elevating overall refinement.

Regarding attire, this short-sleeved red background cheongsam utilizes a lustrous fabric, with three-dimensional golden plum blossom embroidery. The mandarin collar and golden piping along the edges, complemented by traditional frog fasteners, gracefully elongated the neckline. Wearing a cheongsam places high demands on posture; throughout the shoot, keeping the back straight and shoulders lowered was imperative. To accentuate body curves, breathing had to coordinate with keeping the core taut. Though exhausting, seeing the final photos made all that physical tension feel completely worthwhile.

The theme of this shoot was words left unsaid. To convey this concept, we layered varied emotional nuances into the pose choreography. In the first shot, the white numbered placard held in hand was actually an impromptu prop grabbed from the comic convention venue; against the bustling convention backdrop, it created an intriguing contrast of a character abruptly pulled into reality. In the second image, holding up a black folding fan to half-veil the face allowed the bamboo leaf motifs on the fan to contrast sharply against the red cheongsam. Obscuring the lower face with only the eyes exposed created a hesitant body language that perfectly captured Komi's internal struggle of wanting to communicate yet retreating. In the third shot, one hand rests lightly over the chest with fingers slightly curved—calm expression, but with a flicker of hesitation in the eyes—a gesture that directly communicated inner turmoil and speechlessness.

The ambient lighting at the shoot location was quite complex, with overhead exhibition hall lights and blurred silhouettes cluttering the space. The photographer used a wide-aperture lens to completely melt away the background while using fill lights to illuminate facial features and the cheongsam's texture, anchoring visual focus squarely on me. In directing emotion, we avoided perky, exaggerated poses, striving instead for a quiet, slightly detached mood. The photographer's sense of light and shadow was exceptionally keen; having me turn slightly, rim/side-backlight sculpted my facial contours, highlighting the dimension of the red background cheongsam and the sheen of the fabric. Throughout the session, we communicated constantly on micro-expressions, such as gaze placement and chin angles.

I am extremely pleased with the state captured in the final Convention photos. Without overly dramatic performances, Komi's quiet yet deeply rich inner world was brought forth through restraint. Big thanks to the photographer for their patient guidance and candid captures!
