The convention photos from this Chengdu Anime Convention are finally edited and finished, perfectly realizing this new classic styling for Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. I've always wanted to try a Remilia version blending gothic and sweet styles; from fabric selection and pattern making to the final garment, the overall outcome exceeded expectations. For this intertwined burgundy and light pink Lolita dress, the most meticulous part was the upper bodice's stacked lace and the pearl chain accents at the waist, ensuring it didn't look overly bulky while moving. The small black bat wing props on the back were also lightweighted, preventing sore shoulders even after running around the venue all day. The dark semi-sheer tulle on the outer skirt layer is exceptionally breezy, creating gorgeous dimensional layering when walking, paired with red velvet Mary Jane shoes—I am thoroughly satisfied with the overall harmony.
During the shoot, I specifically prepared a red umbrella and a red apple for pairing, enhancing that dark fairy tale texture. The wig features neatly trimmed blunt bangs, matched with reddish-brown contact lenses, and the makeup focused on the depth of the eye look to faithfully recreate an exquisite, doll-like chill. Venue lighting at the convention was quite mixed; to capture a translucent texture, the photographer put immense effort into lighting setups, resulting in a very natural contrast between cool pale skin and the burgundy skirt in the final shots. While holding the red umbrella prop, I continuously adjusted angles to let the folds of the canopy open naturally, or occasionally folded it closed to use as a walking cane, creating strong interaction with the apple. To enrich the frame further this time, I also prepared a doll figure styled identically.
While shooting sitting on the carpet, many passing fellow fans came over to ask for group photos, and everyone was incredibly enthusiastic. Honestly, the happiest part of attending conventions is exchanging thoughts with fellow fans on-site. The temperature inside the venue that day was quite high, and wearing such a multi-layered thick dress was genuinely a bit warm, but the moment the umbrella opened up during shooting, that atmospheric vibe skyrocketed instantly. This time, I also experimented with distinct perspectives from sitting and standing poses, holding the apple to half-cover my face or raising the umbrella in profile, hoping to showcase multiple distinct facets of the character. From selecting the design to final rendering, I communicated numerous details with the photographer and backstage support crew, and post-processing adjustments also fine-tuned the light-transmissive feel of the tulle skirt hem. I adore this process of materializing 2D paper characters step-by-step. Whether shooting on location or wandering conventions, every time I slip into this outfit, I feel like I've truly stepped into the wondrous world of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. That day at the venue, due to the costume's abundant details, several fellow fans even came up to ask for fabric and accessory links, which I answered one by one. For the post-processing color grading of the convention photos, I specifically asked the photographer to preserve the textures of the burgundy and dark tones without excessively boosting saturation, yielding a slightly vintage oil-painting aesthetic. See you all at the conventions, and I'll share new stylings with you next time!
