Why does the ocean sing? These Cosplay convention photos of Helektra cosplay from Honkai: Star Rail offered an answer from the depths of my heart. Cosplaying this character was entirely sparked by her aloof yet deep-sea mysterious design. To faithfully recreate this look, the preliminary preparations were quite intricate. For the wig, I selected a standard straight black base and personally dyed pinkish-purple peekaboo highlights into the underlayer. The pair of white branching horn accessories at the crown was sculpted using lightweight clay and cast in transparent resin molds—wearing them for hours definitely left my neck feeling a bit sore.
The costume is packed with fine details. The deep navy top is crafted from form-fitting stretch fabric, and for the white cross crest at the chest, I deliberately used rigid EVA sheeting coated with metallic paint to produce a crystal-like refractive sheen when struck by light. The translucent chiffon sleeves along my arms feature printed black vine patterns; to hug the contours of my arms cleanly, I secured them with clear straps and cosmetic glue so they wouldn't slide around during movement. The asymmetrical cut and fluttering chiffon of the lower skirt offer rich visual layering; layering blue and purple chiffon together creates the sparkling illusion of undulating sea waves as I walk, with the red lightning motifs on the skirt hand-painted to evoke the feeling of surging energy. To inject a touch of hardcore edge, I wore distressed black stockings (Stockings) paired with black heeled ankle boots, where the platform height elegantly elevated my lower-body proportions.
The long polearm in hand was a centerpiece prop. Featuring a white mechanical hilt and a pink glowing blade, it had internal LED strips installed to shine in the studio, which instantly pushed the atmosphere to the max when paired with the fog machine and background blue-purple particle light orbs. The studio lighting technician was phenomenal—the key light struck diagonally from the side, cleanly carving out facial contours while keeping the blue contact lenses luminous and clear in the low-light environment.
The most grueling part of shooting was holding the poses. The long weapon itself carries noticeable weight, and maintaining a steady angle with one hand while leaning slightly forward required substantial effort—both to showcase the garment's layered cuts and to ensure my leg lines were captured in frame. Because the skirt is translucent, I had to be cautious against wardrobe malfunctions while constantly adjusting the drape of the flowing chiffon. Helektra gives off a serene yet powerful presence, so in facial expression control, I maintained a calm, cool composure with a slightly distant, hazy gaze.
Completing the entire shoot was physically demanding, but seeing the raw cuts made every bit of effort worthwhile. Blending practical props with lighting effects gave the character immense three-dimensional depth. Though the venue was a standard industrial studio, elevated by the lights and fog, it felt like stepping directly into the game's world.
