This shooting setup completely revolves around a "mysterious fairy tale" and a "game of chess." From the scene layout to the costumes and props, the hope is to maximize the visual impact of the red, black, and white colors. The black-and-white checkerboard floor and the red rose petals scattered all over the place form the absolute center of focus. Paired with vintage chess, scattered poker cards, and a perfectly placed spotlight, the overall atmospheric cosplay feel of the frame is instantly maximized.
The costume design for this character is highly ingenious. The red-and-white off-the-shoulder top is paired with a black checkerboard pattern, and the ruffled cuffs and skirt hem add to the overall layering and playfulness. The black rabbit-eared top hat on the head and the metallic collar around the neck are extremely iconic elements, beautifully recreating the character's mocking yet sweet temperament. To better match the character's setting, a high-ponytail white wig was chosen for the hairstyle, with a tiny bit of red embellishment among the hair strands to echo the color details on the clothing. The overall styling preserves the tension of the original character while balancing the refinement of real-life photography.
In terms of makeup, the base makeup was kept as clear and fair as possible, with a strong focus on enhancing the colors of the eyes and lips. Bright red lips combined with that touch of red embellishment under the eyes make the gaze look more playful and agile, overall going for a "sweet with a hint of little demon" style. To balance sexiness and atmosphere, a barefoot look was deliberately chosen this time. Paired with the black strap decorations on the calves, it visually elongates the leg lines further and makes the shooting posture look more relaxed and uninhibited.
The biggest challenge of this shoot was actually interacting with the props. The black rabbit cloth bag held in hand, the black half-finger gloves on the wrists, and that vintage magnifying glass all became key to shaping the character. In different shooting poses, such as squatting on the ground using rose petals to obscure the perspective, or sitting and playing with international chess pieces, a balance had to be found between posing and expression, expressing both the character's laziness and casualness while ensuring the compositional integrity of the frame.
The photographer specifically utilized high-contrast hard light to outline the contours of the body, and the texture of the white hair presented a natural soft-light quality under the strong light. This method of illuminating to highlight the subject under dark tones made the red roses in the environment look even more vibrant and dripping, making the entire character look as if she stepped right out of a dark fairy tale. This shoot gave me a deeper sense of reality for this character. Every detail of the makeup/styling and scene arrangement injected a soul into the final cuts, with every shutter release capturing the cunning and sweetness unique to the character.
