This Castorice cosplay shoot is easily one of my most dedicated works recently. As the Maiden of the Styx in Honkai: Star Rail, I wanted to capture that fragile yet aloof and slightly playful sense of wandering along the boundary between life and death.
The biggest highlight of the costume is this white-and-purple dress; its pearlescent silk creates an icy, flowing sensation under the lights. The cutout waist tailoring and multi-layered ruffled skirt maintain a youthful lightness while exuding a touch of underworld divine majesty. Of course, the most eye-catching feature is certainly this pair of patterned white stockings in the Stocking outfit—the vine and geometric motifs complement the overall purple-and-white palette seamlessly, while the asymmetrical thigh straps visually elongate the legs effectively.
The background staging was remarkably meticulous: ancient stone steps, heavy iron chains, a giant vintage European lantern, clusters of blue hydrangeas, and several glowing blue butterflies. This rich, ethereal cool tone combined with drifting smoke effects completely maximized the underworld ambiance.
To be completely honest, that dramatically oversized giant scythe prop was seriously heavy. Posing with it felt like weight training. To project that effortless, breezy composure in the photos, I was practically gritting my teeth to hold it up. Lifting the scythe overhead or slinging it horizontally across my shoulders severely tested arm strength, and during shooting breaks, I had to immediately put the weapon down to let my arms recover.
Delivering the right emotions during the shoot also took careful thought. In lore, Castorice has a core motif involving skulls. When cradling that white skull, I wanted to present a striking contrast—not terror, but the gentle tenderness of a Styx guardian who has witnessed all life and death. In the shot holding the candle, I deliberately restrained my facial expression, pairing it with a distant, unfocused gaze to capture her quiet, steadfast vigilance.
In post-processing, the photographer opted for high contrast with cool color grading while preserving luminous highlights. The warm glow from the lantern and the expansive purple-blue ambient light formed complementary colors, smoothly separating the subject from the intricate background. The delicate texture of the Stocking outfit and the satin sheen of the skirt hem didn't lose their tactile fidelity despite the dramatic lighting.
Every time I undertake a heavy, large-scale 2D cosplay shoot like this, I'm immensely grateful for the incredible rescue efforts of the crew and photographer. From dressing and handling props to calibrating lights, every step demanded complete focus. Though sweating profusely throughout the shoot, seeing the final images made every ounce of effort completely worthwhile.
