[Mio Cosplay] Arknights: Somniloquium Serenum — A Battlefield Enhanced by Fog

Ever since I decided to shoot this Mio cosplay look for Arknights: Somniloquium Serenum, I had been constantly thinking about how to bring out the character's unique temperament. The cut of the outfit is much looser than expected, with black-and-white fabric layered over a pink lining trim that adds rich depth to the overall outfit.

Holding the short blade in hand, along with the long sword slung across my back and the patterned scabbard held in a reverse grip in my left hand, carrying three weapons at once added considerable weight. Not to mention the black fluffy trim around the collar—though it makes the outfit feel quite thick, on camera it enhances the character's wild and distinctive edge. The small spray of dried white flowers wound around my right wrist, while small, plays a crucial decorative role in the frame. Paired with the string of black and white round beads hanging at my waist, it perfectly tempers the sharpness of the blades, adding a touch of cool Japanese style cosplay elegance.

The light blue wig features a gradient into silver-gray, and I trimmed the bangs quite straight, which, combined with the upward-swept red eye shadow, made for my favorite part of the makeup this time. The white mini-skull accessory, pearls, and flower attachments atop the wig added a wealth of detail that completely transformed my presence once put on. Unlike standard historical costumes, character-focused wigs and hairstyles require far more time to secure and adjust for the right angles.

This shoot actually captured two distinctly different atmospheres. The first photo was taken under a direct red lighting halo; the light is brighter, allowing a clearer view of the delicate patterns and folds on the garment. This lighting setup, blending cyber and traditional aesthetics, gives the character's gaze a penetrating intensity, and the huge red circle in the background lends immense visual impact to the image.

The second photo intentionally cranked up the fog machine output, paired with top white lighting and side fill lights to deliberately create a hazy, dreamlike visual effect. Regarding the second photo, many friends who saw it mentioned that the fog effect gave off a shadowy, haunting, almost ghost-like aura of mystery. But I'd say this mist-shrouded state best captures the essence of Somniloquium Serenum—like a presence wandering through a crimson fantasy realm.

Shooting it was actually quite fun: on one hand, I had to avoid direct gusts from the fog machine blowing my wig out of place, while on the other, controlling the swords and dried flowers in hand to keep them properly positioned. After snapping a few shots, we found that the fleeting moment when the fog slowly dispersed and intertwined with the pure red light produced the best results. Since it was an indoor studio shoot, controlling the light was crucial—if the white light was too intense, that eerie atmosphere would fade, so we had to time the shutter press perfectly.

The contrast between these two photos is really interesting—one is restrained and sharp, while the other is hazy and ethereal, perfectly showing my understanding of different facets of this look. The details of this outfit hold up to close inspection; the collar, cuffs, belt, and layered fabric around the waist all hide subtle design touches, making every wear a fresh experience. Although wielding weapons and carrying the weight was exhausting, seeing that fleeting atmosphere frozen in the final photos made the entire preparation process thoroughly worth it.
