[Jane Doe cosplay] Zenless Zone Zero: In the Abandoned Industrial Zone, Both Beast and Hunter

From the very start of preparation, this Jane Doe cosplay outfit was packed with intricate details. The color palette leans toward wasteland techwear, featuring a grayish-green jacket with a furry shearling lapel collar over a cropped black top. The exposed waistline paired with that slender, pale-blue tail is one of my absolute favorite visual highlights.

For the lower body styling, the black shorts come with metallic buckles. To match the character's combat-worn setting with battle abrasions, I applied translucent flesh-toned bandages and tactical wraps to my legs, finishing with white tactical boots accented with red toe caps. This techwear outfit is actually very convenient for moving around at an Anime convention, being far more agile than floor-length gowns.

Turning to the wig and contact lenses, I specifically chose a black hairstyle with red tips for this character; the bold, vivid red on the hair ends matches her wild and unrestrained vibe perfectly. For contact lenses, I selected light grayish-blue lenses, which made my gaze look significantly sharper during the shoot.

Instead of standard studio shoots during the Anime convention, a friend and I scouted an industrial wasteland near the venue. The location was filled with toppled steel girders, slanted warning signs, and ankle-deep shallow water puddles. Compared to relying purely on green screen post-production in a studio, this authentic environment added an extra layer of raw, gritty tension. Furthermore, the water surface provided reflections; under good weather and sunlight, reflections from the water naturally filled the light onto my face, creating an incredible texture.

The long-handled weapon prop in my hands was actually quite heavy; we customized the jagged yellow glowing geometric core at the top ourselves by installing internal light tubes. Swinging it in hand truly gave the authentic sensation of crushing enemies in Zenless Zone Zero.

Posing for this photo set took immense effort. One specific shot required crouching down completely with one hand bracing on the ground, demanding an extremely low center of gravity and precise muscle control in the waist and legs to prevent the back from looking awkward in frame. We tested it numerous times on set while ensuring the tail didn't bend improperly or distract from the main focal point. With wet ground and standing water, crouching down made my knees quite cold, but going all out was necessary to capture that predatory, poised-to-strike wild stance.

Speaking of this character, her charm lies in her unyielding spirit and formidable combat prowess amidst harsh environments. Though a female character, she is fiercely decisive in battle. In 2D anime convention and photography circles, this character has generated immense buzz recently. To faithfully convey her commanding presence, we intentionally boosted the contrast in color grading while preserving a gritty grain texture, aiming to match the wasteland ambiance of New Eridu in Zenless Zone Zero.

Walking around the ruins in this full gear truly offered an immersive sense of other-worldly survival. I feel that is the greatest joy of cosplay—not just dressing up as a beloved character, but experiencing a glimpse of their living environment for a brief moment.

The water on the ground was cold and shallow, but stepping into it was necessary for composition. The boots were water-resistant, yet remained damp for days afterward. However, seeing the misty, vapor-laden industrial aesthetic in the final photos made it completely worthwhile.

The gloves also received special crafting, featuring metallic buckle rivet accents at the wrists. Although the area between thumb and forefinger rubbed slightly when gripping the weapon, the snug gloves conveyed immense power when wielding the prop.

When posing in this outfit, attention had to be paid to letting the tail hang naturally or point downward. The tail is made of flexible rubber that bends easily, but securing it firmly to the waist was crucial to keep it from shifting during posing.

All in all, cosplaying Jane Doe this time was not only a challenge in costume and makeup fidelity, but also a test of capturing the character's soul within an outdoor wasteland environment. A successful presentation depends not merely on how closely the wig and clothes match, but more importantly on whether the gaze and body language convey that innate wildness from the lore. This set accomplishes a recent small goal of mine, and I look forward to exploring more creative photography styles to interpret other facets of this character in the future.
