During the process of shooting this Golden Lion set, the main energy was invested in how to use light and shadow to restore the character's temperament in the setting. Since the character's main features lie in her light blonde long hair and her iconic pair of pointed ears for this Elf ear style, I made meticulous adjustments to the wearing and trimming of the wig, ensuring that the hair strands would have a natural golden luster under side-backlighting instead of a pure sequin effect. The makeup adopted a matte, foggy base, with the highlighting concentrated on the apple muscles and the bridge of the nose, paired with contouring shadows to soften the sharpness of the facial contours, making the overall look gentler.
For the costume, I chose this tulle dress leaning toward a casual home style, utilizing a large area of semi-transparent tulle and lace patchwork. The difficulty with this kind of material is that it easily generates reflections that cause a cheap texture; therefore, before the shoot, the fabric underwent steam treatment to make the pleats look more natural. During the shoot, the staff at Rancheng Photography Studio cooperated to adjust the color temperature of the lights. The high color-temperature side-backlighting combined with the low color-temperature key light formed a cool-and-warm contrast, which perfectly matched the initially desired feeling of sunshine spilling down willfully.
In terms of lens selection, a medium-to-long telephoto lens was used, which compresses the distance between the background and the character, making the flower wall behind and the vines in the foreground look tighter. During shooting breaks, I maintained a patient introduction of emotions, letting the body lean slightly forward to showcase a relaxed, slice-of-life state. This static presentation instead fits the vibe of such an elf character better than exaggerated movements.
Looking back at the whole shoot, I feel that beyond restoring the character, cosplay is more about understanding the character's personality. Although the combination of elements like sunshine, flowers, and tulle is a common studio match, considering how to find the uniqueness belonging to this specific character among these common elements is necessary. Being crisp, elegant, yet not losing a touch of a young girl's naturalness was the core styling logic of this shoot. The details of makeup, hairstyle, and costume work together to build a three-dimensional visual image. The final presented effect blends in more real-light textures without relying excessively on post-processing filters to stack the vibe, striving instead to achieve the goal via pre-production lighting. Although the process required repeatedly adjusting the position of the reflector, the moment I saw the hair strands dyed golden by the light in the final photo, all the preparation work felt worth it. I hope these photos, which purely record the light and character states through this Light and shadow portrait approach, can let everyone see another side of this character.
