[Jinhsi cosplay] Another Side in a Summer Garden: Interpreting a Unique Wuthering Waves

When planning this Chinese style custom design for Jinhsi cosplay from Wuthering Waves, I wanted to steer away from the combat-oriented style of the original character design. Since it happened to be summer, I thought of creating a photo series in a garden with an everyday Chinese flair. I prepared a dark green floral print dress whose yellow and white blossoms stood out vividly against the backdrop of lush lotus leaves. With its high-slit tailoring, the lines of the calves were highlighted beautifully. I paired it with a white twintail wig tied off with deep green ribbons.

For props, I chose a wooden folding fan. Holding a fan neatly solves the awkwardness of what to do with your hands—whether partially veiling the face or resting gently on the lap, it softens the posture significantly. The shoot was conducted outdoors in the late afternoon approaching dusk, when sunlight filtering through the canopy cast natural dappled light and shadow, adding tangible depth to the fabric. To complement this custom design, I chose pinkish eyeshadow and blush to give the complexion a healthy, vibrant glow.

Post-processing was kept minimal, primarily fine-tuning the overall color palette and enhancing the contrast between green and white. This Chinese style custom design seamlessly blends the universe of Wuthering Waves with the real-life scenery of Jiangnan water towns. The shoot was relaxed; sitting on the veranda's low wall, the pose felt natural, with legs slightly tilted to showcase fluid contours without feeling rigid. The transparent high-heeled sandals were also a styling highlight, harmonizing well with the scenic environment.

A key focus of this shoot was achieving a natural seated pose. Seated postures are among the toughest tests for posing: slouching looks listless, while straining too hard turns it into a stiff corporate shot. We tested shifting the center of gravity to the left leg, with the right leg extended and slightly bent. This visually elongated the leg lines while maintaining overall balance. Wearing transparent heeled slides with toes gently flexed also helped tone calf muscle lines—subtle nuances like these make a huge difference in the final image quality.

Regarding the lighting conditions during this Garden photography session: as late afternoon arrived, sunlight pierced through the dense lotus canopy opposite us, casting soft rays of diffused light. Instead of reflectors, we relied on ambient reflections to brighten the face, achieving a more authentic and soft look. The hair strands gleamed with a silvery-white sheen under the light, creating a lovely contrast against the dark green backdrop. To blend more naturally into the environment, we discussed hand gestures during breaks—how to hold the fan gracefully without tension—and through test shots, dialed in the perfect balance.

Regarding my interpretation of a custom design: acknowledging it as custom means this is not a direct replication of the official canon, but rather my own subjective extension of the character. For this summer, a dress with Chinese floral prints felt just right. White twintails with green ribbons echo the character's core color scheme in Wuthering Waves while retaining an approachable, everyday feel. Reddish-purple colored contacts paired with soft pink blush around the eye corners aimed to evoke a crystal-clear, translucent gaze.

I am extremely pleased with this shoot and the overall concept. From location scouting and makeup styling to the photographer's camera angles, everything fulfilled our initial vision. Omitting stockings was an intentional choice to embrace the breezy freshness of summer. The leisurely vibe emanating from the photos complements the shade of lush greenery, capturing both warmth and tranquility—the very essence this Jinhsi cosplay custom look sought to convey.
