[Komeiji Koishi cosplay] Gensokyo's Secrecy Materialized in Thorns and Picture Frames from Touhou Project

As the cosplayer for Komeiji Koishi, this themed photoset from Touhou Project carries a strong sense of visual conflict, much like her original concept. Although she is set as an unconscious character, in actual filming and post-processing, we preferred to materialize her mysterious, otherworldly nature through props and color schemes.

The costume design for this shoot was exquisitely detailed, featuring a dark base tone with complex layering. The extensive black fabric with gold piping and the rich dark rose textures on the skirt hem fit the Gothic Lolita fantasy aesthetic in Touhou Project. The black top hat on my head, decorated with ruffles, was not only a key styling component but also served to balance the overall visual center during filming. The blue and white flower accents at the collar contrasted sharply with the dark tone of the dress itself, elevating its sense of splendor.

The fantasy prop set was truly the core of this entire Cosplay work. The blue sphere held in my arms had a unique texture, adorned with color-matched flowers and possessing rich color saturation. The thorny vines and bright blue flexible hoses wrapped around my body posed a major challenge for both set construction and post-production. During set design, we had to repeatedly adjust the orientation of the vines and tubing to avoid obscuring important costume details while making them appear naturally grown yet unrealistically intertwined. The deep red background wall and four tastefully arranged golden carved frames visually created a surreal artistic flair. Close-ups inside the frames—acting like storyboards for eyes, hands, and clothing details—greatly enhanced the storytelling aspect of the entire photoset.

During filming, the closed-eye pose was a deliberate choice of expression. In the lore of Touhou Project, Koishi does not rely heavily on external vision to exist; closing her eyes instead brought out the character's inner ethereal tranquility. Photographer @言寺ooo's studio lighting setup was also crucial: the warm red and gold background collided strongly with the cool turquoise hair and blue props, giving the frame a sense of intensity along with a quiet serenity.

As for post-processing, as joked in the online post, editing these rendered me completely exhausted. There were so many elements involved in this set—especially those vines, tubes, and picture frames—that harmonizing their connections, lighting, and shadows tested editing techniques heavily. My personal photo editing skills are still in a learning stage; to perfect details, I repeatedly adjusted lighting textures, color saturation, and corrected perspective distortions caused by bulky props. As part of my Coser daily life, several times I thought it was ready to publish, only to zoom in and spot flaws, forcing me to start reworking all over again.

Although editing was exhausting, seeing the final outcome present this dark, fractured, and grotesque fairytale aesthetic brought immense fulfillment. For myself, completing a character from Touhou Project stems not only from love for the character but also serves as a challenge to my own cosplay expression. We didn't pursue absolute perfection in accuracy, but rather aimed to preserve that unique, unpredictable aura belonging to Komeiji Koishi. Every vine curve and frame placement in this work was the result of continuous trade-offs during prep, filming, and post-production, representing a solid reflection of my current overall capabilities.
